The pilot episode of NBC's action drama Knight Rider was originally presented as a feature-length made-for-television movie. Later, it was split into two halves of a two-part episode for syndication. This is the first half and introduces audiences for the first time to Michael Knight, played by David Hasselhoff. After being left for dead, a police detective is rescued by a billionaire (Richard Basehart), who renames him Michael Knight and equips him with a talking car in order to rid the world of crime.

Sticking to one's convictions and virtues doesn't go over very well with the corrupt elements of the government, as an idealistic politician discovers in this first-season episode of NBC's Knight Rider. Water is at the center of "Not a Drop to Drink," an episode from Knight Rider's debut season that finds Michael attempting to arbitrate between two groups fighting over the rights to a local H2O supply. As the tensions rise between the warring factions, it's up to Michael to save the day before things get out of hand. If the shot of the dam bursting looks familiar, that's because it was "borrowed" from Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie.

Anyone who ever wondered what would happen if the technology behind K.I.T.T. was used for evil purposes need wonder no more after the introduction of K.A.R.R. (voice of Peter Cullen) in this first-season episode of Knight Rider. K.A.R.R. is equally as intelligent and powerful as K.I.T.T., so it proves quite a challenge for Michael and K.I.T.T. to stop the malevolent K.A.R.R. from wreaking havoc. A hit with fans of the show, K.A.R.R. would return in an episode of the show's third season.

Knight Rider is a relic from a simpler time, when audiences demanded less from their TV.

No one who watched this thing could possibly be begging for more. Not that the series was particularly great to begin with, but this is just brain-dead.

Even in the new TV season of the battlin' beefcakers, this series is strikingly inane.

But the show has a great way of taking itself seriously and at the same time laughing right along with us at its own silliness. It's amazing how well that really sells it.
