Tv Season Info

The sensational 1989 case in which two brothers were charged with slaying their parents is dramatized in the eight-episode first season of this anthology series. In the series premiere, Jose and Kitty Menendez (Carlos Gomez, Lolita Davidovich) are found murdered in their upscale Beverly Hills home. Their eldest son, Lyle (Miles Gaston Villanueva), maintains a stoic appearance while his younger brother, Erik (Gus Halper), struggles to deal with overwhelming grief. As detectives Les Zoeller (Sam Jaeger) and Tom Linehan (Cliff Chamberlain) search for the killers, evidence begins to suggest that Lyle and Erik may be the prime suspects. Meanwhile, a tenacious and energetic defense attorney, Leslie Abramson (Edie Falco), takes an interest in the case. Subsequent episodes focus on the people involved in the notorious case, exploring the crime and the media around it, along with the daily battles waged during the trial and revealing little-known truths about what happened behind the scenes.

True Crime isn't about the Menendez brothers at all. It's about their lawyer.

What results is an oddly watchable combination of Law & Order and American Crime Story.

This dull true crime drama feels like an attempt to do what Ryan Murphy did for O.J. without any of the creative spark.

With a subject as lurid and timely as this one, why not throw out the procedural rulebook and have some fun?

Sep 27, 2017 | Full Review…

It's pure dramatization, resting entirely on audience interest in this case alone. And its conceptions of the characters are disappointingly flat.

Just don't expect any style points or departures from the straight ahead Wolf playbook.

If only to see [Edie] Falco in various courtroom scenes, it's worth a watch.

If you don't know what happened, then I suggest you watch The Menendez Murders. It's entertaining despite any shortcomings. You may even disagree with the outcome.

Sep 25, 2017 | Full Review…

The flashbacks we get of Jose and Kitty in life are so heavy-handed that the thought of even more in the trial phase doesn't seem promising.

Sep 25, 2017 | Full Review…

If these two episodes don't promise anything terribly deep, they're packed with enough good performances and details to make us curious about what comes next.
