Set in the early 1950s, “Lessons in Chemistry” follows Elizabeth Zott, whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a patriarchal society. When Elizabeth finds herself fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes.

A solid, prestige drama with a fantastic central performance. Go to Full Review

One big advantage is that it’s extremely and expensively beautiful in a Mad Men sort of way. Another is Larsen, who can always own a screen, even when her character notes seem to be mainly “she frowns a lot”. Go to Full Review

Ultimately everything feels just a little bit too polished. That’s not a bad thing, but it won’t rock your world: it’s a tasty enough treat, but unlike Elizabeth’s cooking, it’s a little underdone. Go to Full Review

Robbie R @Wobster 3 days ago This series set out with such great potential. Highlighting and challenging issues of gender equality and race BUT THEN the dog starts talking? Such a strange decision to somehow capture the thoughts of a dog within the dimension of a series dedicated to science? It’s not just that the dog starts talking but tgat really it adds nothing to the narrative other than trying to soften the tension with despairing moments. And such a bad choice of dog. Really this fluffy thing had army trained attack dog potential but chose to find another life? Any way we are now stuck with the annoying decision as to whether we invest anymore time in this series. See more armchair-opinion S @armchairopinions Aug 16, 2026 Just press play!! It’s so good. Beautifully done. I didn’t read the book, as i understand it’s different. However, the story is moving, funny and thought provoking. I rewatched the entire thing with my mom, she loved it too. See more Mark M @RadioFlyer100 Jun 7, 2026 While Lessons in Chemistry has strong production values, the writing suffers from one-dimensional characterizations and heavy-handed modern sermonizing. Instead of a nuanced historical drama, the show relies on lazy stereotypes, portraying almost every male character and religious institution as malicious, hypocritical, or insincere. This strips the 1950s setting of real complexity.Furthermore, the series attempts to tackle important civil rights themes but does so in a way that feels anachronistic. While genuine racial equality and the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. deserve profound respect, the show uses these historical struggles to sanitize modern, disruptive political tactics. Specifically, depicting the blocking of traffic as a "peaceful protest" ignores the reality that restricting an individual's right to free movement is illegal and harmful. By conflating historical civil rights milestones with today's aggressive methods, the show undermines its own message.
