Lie to Me: Season 1 (2009)

Season 1
Lie to Me

Critics Consensus

It suffers from similarities to other like-minded procedurals, particularly in its writing and characters, but Lie to Me is a relatively fun hour of television with a novel premise.

Critic Reviews for Lie to Me Season 1

All Critics (30) | Top Critics (22)

"Lie to Me" is a terrific idea in search of a story that's a little more terrific than this one seems to be so far.

Dec 16, 2019 | Full Review…

There is an unmistakable been-there-done-that feel to "Lie to Me." It's a basic procedural that seems so determined to replicate the successful playbook of shows like "The Mentalist" and "House" that it winds up telegraphing many of its moves.

Oct 9, 2018 | Full Review…

If Lie to Me wants to elevate itself above all the other shows like it, it needs to beef up the quality of its mysteries.

Jan 21, 2009 | Full Review…

I can't lie. I found Fox's Lie to Me, about a brilliant deception expert, to be predictable, standard fare.

Jan 21, 2009 | Full Review…

if you're fascinated by the poker-game elements of crime-solving and a man obsessed with "tells," you may connect with this show.

Jan 21, 2009 | Full Review…

Fox's new drama Lie to Me not only provides a good hour of television entertainment, it gives the viewer an intriguing "takeaway."

Jan 21, 2009 | Full Review…

Tim Roth offers a solid, acerbic performance as Cal, and he's tempered by the pretty and more level-headed Kelli Williams. Add the young and eager character of Ria the mix, and you have a good front line of actors.

Oct 9, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

That's what Lie to Me is - incredibly watchable entertainment. It's smart, funny, occasionally moving and surprising and it hits almost all of the right beats.

Oct 9, 2018 | Rating: 8.6/10 | Full Review…

It all comes back to Roth, and the ability of the show to succeed past the admittedly moderately entertaining pilot episode rests almost entirely on his shoulders.

Jun 14, 2018 | Full Review…

Another original with a potentially long lifespan for the network.

May 9, 2018 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

Lie to Me offers well-designed (and repeatedly, very white) interiors, utterly formulaic scripting, and familiar characters.

Jan 21, 2009 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

Lie to Me has the makings of a fine procedural for viewers who can't seem to get enough of this type of series.

Audience Reviews for Lie to Me: Season 1

  • Jan 25, 2018
I love the show. The concept of being able to tell if someone is lying is so interesting to me. I also love how they look at why the person is lying too. They managed to come up with a good concept each episode. The actors/actresses all worked well together.
  • Dec 05, 2015
Sometimes repetitive, but with an awesome premise, actors. And we learn a lot.
  • Sep 17, 2015
tim roth is rubbish in this, not his fault just comes over as a complete tw*t
