It is so reminiscent of Modern Family that it already feels stale.

This is one of the few broadcast-network sitcoms this season I can imagine checking in on regularly.

The thing is, despite the structure, Life in Pieces doesn't cover any ground that, say, Modern Family already covered better.

Unfortunately, the pilot is pleasant, bland, and doesn't give that great cast material equal to their talents.

While hardly as ambitious an undertaking, there's a hint of Louie in there, where the main story is added to in isolated, well-realized touches rather than conforming to one standard narrative.

The shifts in tone aside, Life in Pieces was a pretty solid comedy built around a deep roster of talent that wasn't afraid to go for the joke, but still managed to come off more mature than most of the network's other comedy options.

Family comedy that never comes together.

This is one of my favorites so far.

There are some welcome faces in the family... and some amusing moments. But they can't get the tone right, moving for the vulgar almost reflexively.

Life in Pieces, a wacky single-camera intergenerational family comedy, is the staid network's attempt to mimic critical darling and ratings bonanza Modern Family, with edgy (for CBS, mind you) laughs and a squishy heartwarming beat at the end.

It's a finish more sitcommy than the show seems to call for, but one not weak enough to upset the balance of funny and heartfelt that made me want to see a bit more, even if it was just for the pleasure of this company.

Surprisingly unrelatable as a family sitcom.
September 21, 2015
Even at its most outrageous, Life in Pieces feels padded with foam.
September 21, 2015
The obvious irony of the series is that Life in Pieces purports to be about the small, seemingly innocuous moments that linger longest in one's memory, while offering audiences absolutely none of those moments itself.

Nor is [Life in Pieces] different enough to shake that nagging feeling that you're simply watching CBS's attempt to clone ABC's hit.
September 21, 2015
Life in Pieces just needs to hone the show around its ensemble until it becomes worthy of its stars.
September 21, 2015
I'm still rather iffy on Life In Pieces, but I'm willing to give it a chance and see where the next few episodes take us.

CBS' "Life in Pieces" puts a strong cast through an obvious variation on "Modern Family." Yet the cast is a draw, and James Brolin stands out as the loopy patriarch.
September 21, 2015
The shortcoming, at least from the evidence of the premiere, is likely to be in the story selection.
September 21, 2015
The show has novelty on its side, but it also has a talented ensemble that's under (by a guesstimate) half of the time crunch of the average sitcom cast.
