Season 1
Lilyhammer
Relying on Steven Van Zandt's wry gravitas, Lilyhammer mines gentle chuckles from its fish-out-of-water scenario, but declines to offer much beyond a culture clash between Nordic and wiseguy caricatures.

Critic Reviews for Lilyhammer Season 1
All Critics (15) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (9) | Rotten (6)
It has a certain charm to it, and Van Zandt is very watchable. I quite like it.
Leaves you much as it found you. Van Zandt's performance is as broad as one might expect: he doesn't so much act as do his Silvio thing. It's a mobster caricature.
Lilyhammer kept overstepping the line that separates likeably eccentric from plain hokey.
It's The Sopranos meets Cool Runnings.
A fabulous character comedy-drama that's as unusual as it is entertaining.
The show looks good and professional and slick, and it plays; it's perfectly watchable, with a pleasant overlay of processed quirk.
Overall both the deadpan humor and the occasional bits of violence are tepid.
Other fish-out-of-water films and TV series have done it so, so much better and quicker.
Not much is played for direct laughs, but Lilyhammer is damn funny and as warm hearted as the setting is cold.
It's hackneyed, it's forced, it's silly. But the bad news for Netflix is that it's meh.
If you're looking for a well-written, mature series that effectively balances drama and humor, this one fits the bill.
I wouldn't say Lilyhammer is worth signing up for Netflix to see, but if you're already paying for it and you like Van Zandt - and Norwegian knits - it's certainly worth a look.

Jan 02, 2021Absolutely loved this show

Dec 27, 2020Recently I've been hooked in by a couple of Nordic series and gave this one a shot already knowing it was not going to be The Godfather. It takes a while for the cast and director to get a grip and you have to forgive some of the naivete in the early episodes. Eventually though, it steps up gear and as the characters come to life you'll find yourself hooting with laughter. Have some patience. It won't blow you away but it won't waste your time either. Get the popcorn out. It's a worthwhile binge.

Dec 21, 2020It may sound quite strange, but most comedies today forget thar their main goal should be to make people laugh. Fortunatelly, this is not the case with Lillyhammer. Unapollogetiaclly funny, clever and with beautiful scenery, it is quite hard no to binge it. A truly hidden Netflix gem.
