If Lost in Space gets a second season - which seems likely, given the sunk costs Netflix has expended on set construction alone - here's hoping Parker Posey's snaky Doctor Smith and Molly Parker's suffer-no-fools Maureen get more to do.

The real pleasure of "Lost in Space," beyond some competently handled action, are the appealing performances of Ms. Russell, Ms. Sundvall and Mr. Jenkins as the Robinson children. If you decide to take the trip, they're excellent company.

Lost in Space loves its science, but it hasn't advanced enough to prove all that memorable in the here and now.

But this 10-part series isn't nearly as ambitious or thought-provoking as the "Battlestar Galactica" update, which had more on its mind than just cashing in on nostalgia.

It takes till episode 3 to get a really solid sense, but Ms. Posey's potential for chaos seems as limitless as the space-time through which the Robinsons get lost.

Some episodes do feel too long at a one-hour length, but it's heartwarming fun, so brace yourselves for that.

There's just so much padding around all of that. Even when an episode of Lost In Space clocks in at 48 minutes, the events of that episode seem to crawl by.

You can dress up "Lost in Space" in all manner of nifty special effects and clever updates, but the stink of its mediocrity is immediately apparent, as is the clumsiness of its broad intent.

Lost in Space didn't have to be very good at all to improve on either the original or the movie. Still, it's much better than might have been expected.

There's a sense of adventure in Lost in Space, but what could have been more giddy fun has been ejected from the series, and is presumably spinning in orbit somewhere, getting burnt up by the sun.

Sleek, shiny, and boring.

Like the great serial adventure shows and films that Allen used as his template, Lost in Space pushes you to watch another one and another one and another one.

There's nothing inherently wrong with remaking a show from more than 50 years ago, keeping some of the elements but making it a more serious drama. There is something wrong when it's not very interesting.

What's most enjoyable about this show, however, can be summed up by looking at its characters' approaches to life, specifically how they cope with sorrow or anger.

To its credit, Lost in Space has taken on that baggage and still achieved a credible liftoff and landing to its first season. The question lingers how long these Robinsons will be able to sustain that creative trajectory.

A better title for Lost in Space would be Mired in Mediocrity.

Even feeling overcalculated at every turn, Lost in Space is fun, occasionally exciting and ever-so-accessible.

The pacing is a pretty interesting paradox - is it me, or does nothing happen even though the Robinsons almost die at least four times per episode?
