Louie: Season 1 (2010)

Critic Consensus: Acerbic, offensive, and smart, Louie has an air of melancholy that separates it from other pessimistic sitcoms.

Tv Season Info

Season 1 of this semi-autobiographical sitcom follows newly divorced Louie (Louie CK), a stand-up comedian, who is raising his daughters Lily (Hadley Delany) and Jane (Ashley Gerasimovich and Ursula Parker, who took over the role mid-season) in New York City. Hilarity ensues as he juggles everyday life, being a good father to his girls and attempting to find love again. Luckily, he can find humour in every situation life throws at him. Ricky Gervais has a recurring role as Dr Ben in this season.

As brash as his material can be, a melancholy mood nonetheless hangs over the show. It gives Louie' a heart.

June 29, 2010 | Full Review…

"Louie" rarely overplays things. The heavy stuff is always offset by the star's comedic genius, but the show maintains a realism that you simply can't shake.

There's something undeniably endearing about Louie, who even at his most shocking seems willing to acknowledge the force of language - and who generally reserves his most cutting words for himself.

A brutally funny slice of rant that bears a surface resemblance to Seinfeld in the way that the show organically builds its episodic vignettes around the star's stand-up shtick.
