Critics Consensus

Cleverly plotted and a wonderful showcase for star David Mitchell's brainy charm, Ludwig is a thoroughly pleasant mystery series that stays light on its feet.

An entertaining, mordantly funny show that’s also softhearted despite all the killings. Mitchell and Maxwell Martin have tremendous chemistry, as do Mitchell and Ola. The whole cast clicks. Go to Full Review

“Ludwing” never loses its pip nor its charm and a large reason why it works rests on Mitchell’s tensed-up shoulders and the show’s creators. Go to Full Review

It’s exactly what you want in a mystery: weekly cases that are complicated (but not too complicated), solved with puzzle logic, plus an overarching mystery that keeps the season moving. Go to Full Review

“Ludwig” is a real sleeper. Starting slowly, it grows on you until you are completely under its spell. Go to Full Review

Kevin L @Kevlar68 Oct 8, 2026 Made it to episode 4... Every show becoming a game of Clue with different characters and locations. Only SIX people working at a construction site with 3 10 story buildings??? See more SheilaF T @SheilaMar10 Sep 7, 2026 Clever, funny, and delightfully offbeat. Waiting eagerly for season 2 to stream in the US! See more Tara S @RT07783965 Sep 5, 2026 Puzzling and quirky (pun intended). See more Jeff B @RT99430060 Sep 2, 2026 Outstanding. Even if it is clearly written as a vehicle for David Mitchell's overly autistic main character, it's almost perfectly written for him to play the main character and set against the impossible mystery macguffin that continues to be secondary to the character development. I expect that much like Twin Peaks, The mystery can never be solved and allowed to maintain the pace of the show and its premise. This is pure BBC comedy drama at its best. MORE! See more Michelle H @mholt8825 Sep 2, 2026 My husband and I loved this series. We found it funny and inventive and can't wait to see the subsequent seasons. David Mitchell was also brilliant. As Americans, it was our first time seeing him in a show and hopefully not the last. He added a Peter Sellers quality to the John Taylor character that we loved and made us laugh. I wish more series were like this and as good. See more Ivan F @Neogrey Aug 30, 2026 You gotta be a fan of David Mitchell's comedy work, especially in TV panel shows like Would I Lie To You to fully enjoy this, but even without this, you'll enjoy some great bits. Seems that Cambridge police authority gives jobs to all kinds of funny accents, particularly Sophie Willan's. David an Anna are just perfect in their characters. A must watch!!!!
