Mad Dogs: Season 1 Reviews

It's a show with a whole lot more depth when you look at it as uneasy commentary on the values that let these guys down. Mad Dogs didn't come here to celebrate American masculinity, but to mourn it.

Mad Dogs is a major commitment, one that those who like their comedy in shades other than pitch black may not be willing to make.

Dark, adult comedy about macho men in trouble is violent.

On the surface there's a gripping, contorted thriller with many spellbinding plot twists. Beneath that, there's mordant commentary about very large geopolitical issues going on. It's rather brilliantly pulled off.

The cast is top-notch... acting like a bunch of fun-loving dudes having their male-only Big Chill moment - but then also bringing a palpable undercurrent of tension and competition that gradually rises to the surface.

Mad Dogs, in other words, is trying something that's really complicated and ambitious, and failing as often as it's succeeding. But in my book, you get at least a few points for effort.

As Mad Dogs propels forward, it actually is most compelling in its slower moments, when Joel, Lex, Gus, and Cobi address their strenuous pasts with one another and what that means for their current situation.

Every time I was on the verge of throwing up my hands at the seemingly limited structure, Mad Dogs would present some haunting image I wanted to see more of.

While there's no real tangible attempt to be prestige TV here, the show doesn't ever devolve into purposeful camp or trash either. Instead, this is, like many shows we see in this era, an enjoyable, compelling, but inessential affair.

Aside from the dimestore psychology and underlying fear of foreigners, it's a fairly gripping start.

The perils pile up to an absurd level in this 10-part drama with some late, much needed relief from Fargo's Allison Tolman.

It's a familiar theme, but thrillingly executed in the early going.
January 19, 2016
Ryan's writing, collaborating with Cris Cole, is typically razor-sharp, but the real draw here is the cast, all of whom find ways to stand out in a show that's very plot-driven.

The show is an insane, drug fueled adventure that would make the late Tony Scott blush. However, thanks to a clear intent of vision, it never succumbs to its own madness.

Meaty Mad Dogs is not, but it's certainly entertaining and unpredictable.

The show's view of Belize vacillates between astute and offensive... But it sustains a fine mix of irony and menace, and makes excellent strategic use of silence.

The cast Ryan and Cole have assembled have a watchable, scratchy chemistry and the final 15 minutes see the pace ratcheted up several notches.

While Mad Dog isn't spotless, it's interesting in that its early-episode "problems," such as a loud and voracious sex scene, end up justifying themselves plotwise by the pilot's end.

Shawn Ryan's Mad Dogs looks great and plays great.

The pilot's ending fails to land with the dramatic intensity it intends as a result of some awkward camera moves, but the mildly enjoyable first installment of Mad Dogs shows the potential to be fun, dramatic and engrossing.
