Mad Men: Season 6 (2013)

Critic Consensus: The passage of time has done little to dull Mad Men's rich cast of characters, who continue to confound.

Tv Season Info

Series 6 finds the characters dealing with the shocks and social upheaval of 1968, one of the most-turbulent years in American history. Don Draper (Jon Hamm) has returned to his bad habits and is now carrying on a dangerous affair with the wife of a friend, heart surgeon Arnold Rosen (Brian Markinson). His wife Megan (Jessica Paré) has found success as a soap-opera actress, but feels more distant from Don than ever. Meanwhile, Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) deals with the pressures of a new job, Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) watches as his marriage falls apart and Betty Francis (January Jones) attempts to get her life back on track.

Everything old isn't new again. Everything is just suddenly old.

If all this sounds heavy and ponderous, then the fault is mine alone, because Mad Men is also about pleasure -- primarily for those viewers who have invested so much in these rich characters over the past five seasons.

America's current sense of insecurity is Weiner's touchstone.

Wow, just wow.

Weiner's end-game for his leading man does not appear to be brightly lit. Nor is Season 6 of Mad Men off to a particularly sparkling start creatively while we wait for the worst to come.

The series always proves energetic when depicting Don's trippy business trips.

Whatever useable insights the show might offer come in its portrayal not of big historical movements but of the inner lives of its finely drawn characters, whose desire... and nostalgia combine to aid in the birth of a new world - or to prevent it.

Well, that was long, wasn't it? In all seriousness, we're glad to have Mad Men and its increasingly "dense" narrative back.

...delivering all the pleasures that today's most ambitious drama series can bring.

With the specter of death effectively moving into the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce offices in this episode, I predict we'll see Don endure his most major reckoning before the season is over.
