A Day's Work

Critic Consensus: Though Peggy felt out of character in "A Day's Work," dazzling performances by Kiernan Shipka and Jon Hamm gave Sally and Don's relationship a cathartic authenticity.

Critic Reviews for A Day's Work

I can't recall another Mad Men episode that so clearly illustrated the uneasy tensions that smolder between characters along race and gender lines.

"Sally Draper, the Queen of the awkward drop-in." A slow episode with a few sitcomish elements -- I hated the Peggy flowers bit even if it was designed mostly just to get Joan to a new place -- but the scenes between Don and Sally were stellar.

Groundwork was laid, and while it may not have been all fun and games, "A Day's Work" got the job done.

What really made this episode for us was another highly satisfying exploration of the greatest, most important relationship Don Draper's life; the one he has with his daughter Sally.

"A Day's Work" is all about imbalance and discordance, mostly as a result of Don's failures as an individual, an adman, and a father.

This episode was a stalemate for the revival of Don's missing mojo. But it was a major victory for the secretaries -- not that it was easy.

This episode sees all the women in the office swapping offices, jobs, and Valentine's Day roses as Joan moves upstairs, Dawn gets demoted and then promoted, and a bouquet of flowers sets Peggy off. The ladies are the stars so far this season!
