Acclaimed writer Hans Rosenfeldt continues his first British drama following the international success of the Swedish/Danish series "The Bridge." Anna Friel stars in the lead role of Marcella Backland, a British police detective working in contemporary London. Set in Rosenfeldt's unique style of "Nordic noir," the body of a missing child is discovered inside a wall and a task force is assembled to catch the killer. A complex set of characters from all walks of life and interweaving storylines take viewers on a dark and emotional journey with turns at every corner.

If it's a coincidence then it's a hell of a coincidence, and the credulity-stretching twists really are starting to strain at the edges. Go to Full Review

Friel is watchful, wary, mostly blank as the unfathomable Marcella. The emotion only shows when she's mid-snog. You can predict to the second when the eyes will open for that over-his-shoulder panic look. Go to Full Review

Dodgy accents aside, meanwhile, the mob clan seem baroque and bonkers enough to justify further viewing. Go to Full Review

It's hard to say whether Marcella is entertainment or a sort of binge-and-purge experience where all kinds of toxic stuff gets vomited up over the scenery. It feels unhealthy, but it exerts a guilt-evoking grip. Go to Full Review

Friel is strong, and she has a good nemesis in Amanda Burton as the steely matriarch of the family. Go to Full Review

David F @RT34372367 12/23/2024 This was less fun than previous seasons. Marcella pretends to be dead, and bleaches her hair as a disguise. She is assigned covertly to Northern Ireland by a different police boss, but coincidentally, her Indian boss from London, Rav is also assigned to a connected crime, so travels over to Ulster. There's bits of Macbeth and King Lear thrown into the plot, and ageing Irish beauty, Amanda Burton plays the ruthless head of a morally-bankrupt crime family. One would almost think that Netflix had some Irish production money in this. See more Ted B @Movieaddicted 05/30/2024 4.0 stars; Well, what a fitting end to an obsessive trilogy. Series 3 was something completely different from 1 and 2. It was more of an action undercover cop story vs a who-dun-it crime story. The plot delved into the palace intrigue in the family of a Belfast mob. I really appreciated the twist, though not surprising, ending. I guess my biggest complaint was that there were too many dull stretches involving the lead characters' mental issues. What saved the day, in fact, maybe the whole Series, was the sterling performance given by Anna Friel. With all its ups and downs, I have to confess that I was obsessed with the Series and was able to complete all three Seasons in under two weeks. Count me among those hoping and wishing for a Season 4. See more Krishna K @RT89361548 01/24/2024 it was good for most part but the unpleasant sound effects are very annoying, maybe its was a poor effort to recreate the mental state of the protagonist in the audience See more Allister B @RT11265210 04/26/2023 Shabby plot spread thinly across eight episodes except at the end when the show subverts expectations (posh speak for turns in to a load of b******s). Literally so ridiculous a laughed my a*** off. Needless to say the highly dislikable lead character who spends most of her time psychopathic or high walks away from her trail of destruction with everything. I think you are supposed to be happy about this . . . You won't be. See more Matt J @RT85622388 12/29/2022 Anna Friel has an 8 episode panic attack with the occasional cameo from some improbable Irish gangsters. The acting from Anna Friel remains stellar but the writing is about as bad as it is possible to get. See more pete s @Petefilm66 11/30/2022 Not normally a fan of ITV drama as it can tend to be trite. But Marcella is an exception. Anna Friel is compelling as the tough but at the same time vulnerable cop, fighting with her own demons. The third series, with Marcella undercover in a Belfast gangland family, (kind of Ulster-noir), has been the best I think. Sad then that the audience numbers continued to falter. Only weakness has been that some of the key supporting characters have been a little too one dimensional. See more Read all reviews
