Mars has conceptual problems... though the attempt is interesting. The fictional half isn't particularly sophisticated as space odysseys go.

What's largely missing here is any sense that the enterprise might be exhilarating, mind-blowing, a kick - only important and dangerous.

While fleeing this planet for a new life on Mars may be tempting right now for more than just scientific reasons, Nat Geo's intriguing effort to show us how such a trip could actually happen proves convincing on its own.

It appears the once reliable filmmaker has lost contact with human emotions. To get back on the winning track, Howard will have to reconnect with his inner Opie and return to heartfelt dramas and comedies led by irresistible stars.

A particularly handsome production that dares viewers to dream the impossible - and dares them to watch some sporadically cheesy dramatizations, too.

Though the hybrid isn't quite seamless, Mars is a thought-provoking and visually stunning production, albeit one that isn't exactly riveting. It's a slow, considered exploration... that's probably what our journey to Mars should be like.

The format is ambitious, and if some parts don't entirely work, there's still a lot to like and learn in Mars.
