I'm excited for Cloak & Dagger because of the thing it's going to become, the dance the characters are beginning to choreograph around each other -- the anticipation and the narrative tension.

Cloak and Dagger suffers from what many of the other Marvel shows do: it's too sluggish in its story pace and the plot falls by the wayside.

The premiere mistakes the details of its characters' backstory for propulsive storytelling, and in doing so begins long before the story actually starts.

[Marvel's Cloak & Dagger] isn't sharp enough to draw blood.

Their journey should be thrilling, fascinating. It's a chore.

[The] supporting cast also gets an upgrade.... while each of these tweaks is relatively minor on its own, all together they put the series in a much better position to succeed than a direct adaptation would.

There are outlines of a lot of very good ideas but none of them are quite fleshed out - yet. So far, Cloak & Dagger is strictly OK.

Cloak & Dagger is a well-crafted, captivating nightmare. A harrowing story aboutthe limits of the human breaking point.
June 8, 2018
Cloak & Dagger is also something we haven't seen from Marvel in years: a canon without the baggage of legions of fans, expectations, and pre-loaded storylines.

The show is about race, class, police violence, corruption, and even faith, with the superhero stuff as window dressing. That's both the strength and weakness of the show.
June 7, 2018
In a media market filled with caped crusaders, Cloak & Dagger still manages to stand out by breaking the rules for what it means to be a superhero.
May 24, 2018
Cloak & Dagger isn't exactly a show for die-hard comic book purists looking for a live-action translation of the superheroes they love, but that ultimately works out in its favor because that's not what it's trying to be.

All [the] ponderousness is executed with a confidence and skill that promises a satisfying first season, and one I think you should give a shot. Let Marvel's and Freeform's kid sibling shine its own light (and shadow).

This storytelling method sets the show apart from the rest of the pack of Marvel television and even television in general. It's weird. It's trippy. And it's great. You probably haven't seen TV like this before.

Tackling a variety of relatable subjects while embracing the thrill of discovering new powers, Cloak & Dagger delivers an emotionally honest and surprisingly resonant premiere.

As a watcher of many, many shows on Freeform, I have to say, this show (the pilot at least) ranks among the top.

Cloak & Dagger doesn't have full control of its powers in its first two episodes, but through its commanding young lead actors and its timely and relevant themes, it shows much potential.

Understands something that many other superhero TV shows, or other TV shows in general, sometimes never get: the deepest, most urgent drama doesn't come from external conflict, but from the complex and infinite emotional context of a human life.

You won't find a more gently realized, naturalistically performed, and moodily moving meta-human saga anywhere else on the dial.

Cloak and Dagger isn't a joyful series - it's an often somber coming-of-age story of two kids deeply traumatized but trying to heal - but it's joyful to watch it unfold.
