Marvel's M.O.D.O.K.: Season 1 (2021)

Season 1
Marvel's M.O.D.O.K.

Critics Consensus

Though its tendency toward too-muchness may test some viewers' patience, slick stop-motion, a killer voice cast, and a seemingly endless well of jokes make M.O.D.O.K. an entertainingly chaotic diversion.

Oswalt, for his part, manages to invest M.O.D.O.K. with more personality than the comics ever bothered to.

Some of the episodes are more forgettable than others, but it has a consistent cleverness that makes its flaws easy to overlook, especially when the lines are delivered by such talented voice actors.

M.O.D.O.K. is sharp, hilariously absurd and throws zingers at you like, "womb-wrecking head". That's a visual you won't find Chris Evans' Captain America trying to conjure.

Filled with quick-one liners and bloody good sight gags, brimming with pop culture references, reminiscent of adult-oriented animated series such as The Simpsons and Family Guy...

I came here for the wacky adventures of a big-headed murdery science bro in a floating chair trying to take over the world - I just didn't expect it to take ten whole episodes for the show to finally deliver that.

Whether skewering the Marvel universe, Silicon Valley, internet influencers, or pop-culture in general, M.O.D.O.K. is consistently hilarious.

The new stop-motion comedy from Hulu is kind of perfect for a time when hero fare has become a little too involved.

Jun 1, 2021 | Full Review…

M.O.D.O.K. is perfect for comedy, and in this dark age where no Marvel IP can long go unexploited, Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum have given him the perfect vehicle: a sitcom.

I have no doubt that when/if we get a second season of Marvel's M.O.D.O.K., the series will rise to meet and surpass its current challenges. As it is, it's still a silly, entertaining watch designed especially for its niche nerdy audience.

Turns out there's a reason Marvel's lesser-known characters are lesser-known. Stay tuned for the adventures of Spider-Man's second cousin or something.

Setting 'MODOK' in a sitcom environment works because while it may be high-stakes and world domination in every episode, he's that much of a f*ck-up that it never goes beyond silly situational comedy.

It's [M.O.D.O.K.] trying to be a supervillain but dealing with all the other crap that you gotta deal with as a human, and that's where the comedy comes in.

Audience Reviews for Marvel's M.O.D.O.K.: Season 1

Probably the biggest surprise of the year so far is Marvel and Hulu's M.O.D.O.K. The show adds a layer of depth and characterization to the iconic Marvel , that is almost unseen in Marvel media. The series, as a result, is surprisingly endearing and tells a quite human story of struggle, while still having all that Marvel glory that fans come to expect. Technically speaking, the show is visually stunning, with fantastic animation and well voice acted by its cast. As a sitcom, it also delivers a mostly funny experience, while avoiding the usual entrapments of a sitcom formula, with an intriguing overarching storyline. There are some pacing issues, with the show taking a couple episodes to find its footing, and the less plot focused episodes feel the weakest. Also, due to the rapid pace of jokes, the comedy lands about as frequently as it misses. 7.5/10

Hopefully this is not MCU cannon and just a view of a robot chicken universe.
  • Jun 10, 2021
Trash, it just sucks. Re-hashed sitcom plots and lame jokes. Plus Patton Oswalt's voice is getting annoying.
  • Jun 09, 2021
Another Marvel Hulu disappointment. I wasn't expecting a whole lot from MODOK, perhaps just a second tier comedy with dark humor. There were some funny moments sprinkled in, but not enough to carry the show from episode to episode. I think there is a good concept here, but the writing and execution was subpar. The only bright point is that this is certainly non-cannon and not necessary viewing for Marvel fans.

He knows how to mix comedy well with a good origin story, which results in a series that you want to keep following.
  • Jun 07, 2021
Made it to episode 6 in the hope that it must get better. It does not. For a show like this to succeed it must be funny but it relies too heavily on dark grisly deaths followed by a sort of 'Oops' for it's laughs, a bit like Kenny getting killed in every episode of Southpark.
  • Jun 07, 2021
Seems to get better as it goes on.
  • Jun 07, 2021
Perfectly cast. So many literal LOL moments
  • Jun 06, 2021
I really enjoyed it. If you are a marvel fan, it's the perfect show. A lot of Easter eggs that die hard fans like myself will pick up on, and filled with tons of superhero/ villain guest appearances. It's adult oriented humor is clever and the episodes are well paced. I really hope we get a seccond season!

This kind of shows destroy your enthusiasm for Marvel shows, it doesn't deserve nothing. 1/10
