Critic Reviews for Mary + Jane Season 1

The relationship at the center of all the action is missing an important element: chemistry. Rothe and Durwood are likable as Paige and Jordan, but they don't fit together organically as best friends.

Much of Mary + Jane is obnoxious.

Sep 2, 2016 | Full Review…

Mary + Jane is not High Maintenance and it's not Broad City. At its best it's got something of the charm of a Pineapple Express mixed with that of a stoner-baiting Taco Bell commercial. At its worst it's a lifeless, flat buddy comedy.

Sep 21, 2016 | Full Review…

Mary + Jane trips all over itself in its rush to be current, edgy, and interesting.

Sep 12, 2016 | Full Review…

The endless pot-laced references get a little tired, but some of show's best moments are those that poke fun at the ever-changing (and often outlandish) trends that are part of the Los Angeles scene.

Sep 12, 2016 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Mary + Jane struggles to balance the strangeness of Broad City with the somber truth of Girls, and it leads to some tonal issues, but at its funniest this is a noteworthy, endearing, female-centric comedy with high potential.

Sep 1, 2016 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

The unimaginative execution of Mary + Jane makes its effectiveness as a product placement vehicle a bit dubious.

There's enough charm and budding star power here that I'm likely to stick with Mary + Jane, even if its highs are very familiar.

Great first and last episodes, and performances by the two lead girls! Those episodes are the only ones written only by the creators, and without an "executive story editor" (bullshit job.) They also directed two episodes, the third which was decent (they didn't write it) and the finale. That's why I think the finale shined as the best episode. They had already done the show, and at this point an entire season, so they were able to do better than the pilot which they need to use to build and sell the show. The third episode was decent, their direction helped poor writing that used the interesting plot as an excuse for not writing laughs. Other than those three, there aren't really any other good episodes, the rest are just alright. Glad I watched all the way to the end. I had quit watching, but with only two episodes left, and usually I like my reviews to be as accurate as possible, which means watching the whole season. It's alright, disappointing season after a good pilot, but the season benefits from starting and ending strong.

This is a fun show. I like the cast, I laugh every episode, and I think it's a good plot. I watched like 7 episodes in a row randomly and I'm sad I have to wait for more now that I'm caught up! I can understand if some people think they act ditsy, but I think they're strong female characters. I don't know how long MTV's shows usually last, but I really hope this one sticks around! I loved that Seth green guest starred in the last episode- I hope he stays, too. This show has promise- If you love Broad City, you'll (hopefully) love this
