Matador: Season 1 (2014)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Though choppy at times, Matador is fast-paced, silly fun that benefits from not taking itself too seriously.

Critic Reviews for Matador Season 1

All Critics (12) | Top Critics (9)

Glitzy, spoofy, and bristling with attitude, Matador is the modern equivalent of I Spy, the classic '60s series about a pro tennis player/secret agent, starring Robert Culp and Bill Cosby.

Matador is fairly jaunty and breezy. But it also throws in some serious-minded violence as part of the mix. Those who have access to the El Rey Network might want to give it a shot. Those without shouldn't mope about it.

While El Rey's Matador won't have the viewers yelling "Gooooal!", the show's unique, frenetic style will still probably catch their attention.

A fun, entertaining action show, the timing is right for Matador after soccer's rising American prominence, thanks to World Cup fever.

I had a lot of fun with the pilot and want to see how silly-awesome things get. So yeah, watch it.

Jul 14, 2014 | Full Review…

As a summer series in the wake of World Cup fever, perhaps Matador's biggest success it having arrived at the right time.

Jul 17, 2014 | Full Review…

The show is weighed down by clunky dialogue and a lead who was not particularly dazzling in the initial episode sent out to critics. Luna's Bravo lacks that James Bond je ne sais quoi, even if he's a reluctant participant in his own plot.

The show is a compendium of high-octane clichés, just clever enough that you can't call it stupid and just stupid enough that you can't call it clever. That's a sweet spot, maybe.

The culture is acknowledged, but it's never the point. It matters and it doesn't matter, and there's a sort of progress in that.-

Jul 15, 2014 | Full Review…

Matador is definitely B-level -- serviceable dialogue, not-quite-cartoonish characters, gimmicky editing - but it's not grindhouse.
