Sitcoms come and go. And then there's "Maude," the groundbreaking Norman Lear comedy. The show revolves around Maude Findlay, a very outspoken middle-class woman who wears her liberal politics on her sleeve and shares her home in suburban Tuckahoe, N.Y., with fourth husband Walter; her divorced daughter, Carol; and Carol's adolescent son, Phillip. Walter and Maude's best friends are next-door neighbors Dr. Arthur and Vivian Harmon. Among the domestic help that Maude helps "liberate" during the run of the show are Florida Evans and Mrs. Nell Naugatuck.

The show lagged in spots, but overall the writing and timing were crisp and good, funny lines well distributed among the regulars. Go to Full Review

Beatrice Arthur in the title role is the screaming liberal to Archie Bunker's screaming redneck, and her performance is as sensitive and believable and hilarious as the show itself. Go to Full Review

Mike P @RT09890132 07/09/2023 Overall this was an excellent, groundbreaking show. More so than All in the Family in some ways. (I mean Archie never got an abortion! Or was in a physically abusive relationship with his wife! Or attempted to get arrested for trafficking in drugs! Or had a gay friend he hung out with frequently! Or got a facelift or plastic surgery!! We could go on and on...) Bea Arthur is superb as the complex liberal firebrand at the center of the show. Bill Macy as Walter as her high strung husband is equally great... As are Rue McClanahan as Maude's goofy best friend Vivienne; or Conrad Bain as the conservative crank stand-in for Archie Bunker... And often the show is great. (The pilot...The one when Florida is hired... The "Maude's Houseguest" episode... "Maude's Dilemma"... And many others...). Sometimes it's pretty mediocre. (The talent show episodes...) It's a hit or miss affair based on the quality of the writing in any particular week. It's about 80% great and 20% so-so.... But it's all memorable due to Bea Arthur's amazing performance. Definitely recommended 👍 See more Read all reviews
