Maya & Marty: Season 1 (2016)

Season 1
Maya & Marty

Critics Consensus

Maya & Marty is a safer, weekday version of Saturday Night Live with little to recommend it other than Maya Rudolph and Martin Short's admittedly considerable charms.

Critic Reviews for Maya & Marty Season 1

Ironically, one of the things that was a problem for such an underwhelming show on the whole was that it had a couple of flashes of excitement that emphasized how phoned-in some of the rest of it often felt.

The whole enterprise felt like a modest "Tuesday Night Live" with Lorne Michaels executive producing. The old-school sketch comedy veterans pulled it off. They could help pass the time on a hot summer night.

Oh how I love Maya Rudolph and Martin Short. And oh how I didn't love their new summer variety series, Maya & Marty.

I agree that Martin Short is a treasure, and I feel much the same about Maya Rudolph. That's why it's somewhat heartbreaking to report that Maya & Marty... seems, at least on first viewing, like a mess.

It's during the sketches that the show loses steam. Many of the ideas seem half-baked; they start out promisingly, but don't go anywhere.

It's amazing that people as intelligent as Rudolph, Smart, and Michaels didn't realize immediately that doing a mere variation on SNL would fall flat.

It turned out to be Saturday Night Live lite. That's not a bad thing.

It's a variety show from 1976, with the freedom and production values of 2016. It's not for everybody, but if it's for you, you'll know it.

Unsure of how to distinguish itself as a something wholly original.

With the right guests and a little more finesse from the writers, Maya & Marty has the elements to be amiable and doesn't require staying up late on a weeknight.

Audience Reviews for Maya & Marty: Season 1

I enjoyed Maya and Marty. It's a fun show for the summer off season. It was also nice to see some comedy. No other network was trying anything funny this summer.

Many laugh out loud moments. An instant classic. It connects in a way SNL (which has too many agendas and a less that stellar cast) no longer does.

Wonderful show. Please bring it back

LOVED IT!!! I'm sorry to see it end. Definitely had a Carol Burnett feel to it, which made it all that more awesome. Going to miss you, Maya, Marty, & Keenan!!!

I've watched a few episodes and so far I'm very impressed. It is like the digital shorts and Saturday Night Live and this has a lot of great content. I especially enjoy the Jiminy Glick sketches which was a character that used to be on Comedy Central 15 years ago.

Get new writers because the cast and guests are awesome. Don't waste good talent with bad story lines. It's painful to watch.
  • Jul 05, 2016
Go with the AUDIENCE SCORE. Not all of it is funny but a majority of it is.
  • Jul 03, 2016
Refreshing, entertaining, & humorous...a nice change of pace from the usual line up of violence, sex, &/or reality television that clutters the airways nowadays.
  • Jun 29, 2016
I'm done with Lorne Michael's attempts at force feeding us his obsolete, agenda-driven, and desperate versions of "comedy". This show is a prime example of that. I used to love Martin Short and can only hope that this latest project helps bring his ego back to reality. I actually really wanted to like this show, but it is just further proof that LM and his style needs to call it a day.
