A crime drama about an important contemporary issue, America's prison system, "Mayor of Kingstown" follows the McLusky family in Kingstown, Mich., where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry; the family of power brokers between police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians tackle themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality; the crime thriller series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite campaigning with a strong pedigree, Mayor of Kingstown botches its reelection chances by giving constituents too much gloom and grit and not enough reasons to care.

Sheridan is in his element when it comes to creating male characters with a tendency towards sudden, shocking violence. Subtlety is not his forte -- but, even so, his concerns about private prisons are likely to slide past most of the red-state viewers. Go to Full Review

Renner's ferociously powerful performance is the best thing about The Mayor of Kingstown, a gritty, highly pedigreed, impressively photographed and well-acted series... Go to Full Review

Unless the story improves significantly, it's hard to imagine a scenario in which Mayor of Kingstown gets reelected. Go to Full Review

Sheridan and his series languish in the worst aspects of humanity. Gone are the moral quandaries and brilliance of Sicario or Wind River. Instead, Sheridan crafts one of his worst projects to date. Go to Full Review

If you don’t care for [Taylor Sheridan's] previous efforts, though? Well, it’s probably not a bad idea to skip the Kingstown exit while driving I-75. Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 Mar 29 Mayor of Kingstown is one of the most underrated crime dramas of recent years. It is brutal, relentlessly dark, and built around a city where prisons, gangs, police, politics, and families all feed the same cycle of violence. What makes it great is not just its harshness, but how fully realized its world feels. Jeremy Renner is outstanding, giving Mike McLusky a mix of toughness, exhaustion, intelligence, and vulnerability that anchors the whole series. The supporting cast is excellent too, and the direction, cinematography, production design, and score all work together to create an oppressive, deeply unsettling atmosphere. It is not a comforting show, and it does not try to be. But if you connect with its tone, it becomes gripping, powerful television with the kind of world-building that recalls the best crime sagas. See more Andrew B @ABdestroyer233 Mar 20 Very good. This show is dark, gritty, and a perfect example of a decaying town run down by organized crime. I cannot commend Jeremy Renner’s performance more, he has done an excellent job at playing Mike McClusky and making the character so badass!!! The actors are top notch. If you like drama, crime with a realistic touch, this is a great show to watch. See more Alpha B. @RT16438397 Feb 9 Great show. Almost didn't watch it because of the low critic score. Glad I gave it a chance. See more Edward F @RT21493057 Jan 26 Heavy, very serious, many jaw-drop moments. Well worth the time. Surprise, surprise - critics again show they are irrelevant on something audience generally enjoy. I and my parents loved this, then I watched it again with a friend, and he loved it. Yet another example of why the RT score needs to be "popcornmeter", NOT the critics foolish posturings. See more Read all reviews
