A crime drama about an important contemporary issue, America's prison system, "Mayor of Kingstown" follows the McLusky family in Kingstown, Mich., where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry; the family of power brokers between police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians tackle themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality; the crime thriller series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite campaigning with a strong pedigree, Mayor of Kingstown botches its reelection chances by giving constituents too much gloom and grit and not enough reasons to care.

Sheridan is in his element when it comes to creating male characters with a tendency towards sudden, shocking violence. Subtlety is not his forte -- but, even so, his concerns about private prisons are likely to slide past most of the red-state viewers. Go to Full Review

Renner's ferociously powerful performance is the best thing about The Mayor of Kingstown, a gritty, highly pedigreed, impressively photographed and well-acted series... Go to Full Review

Unless the story improves significantly, it's hard to imagine a scenario in which Mayor of Kingstown gets reelected. Go to Full Review

Sheridan and his series languish in the worst aspects of humanity. Gone are the moral quandaries and brilliance of Sicario or Wind River. Instead, Sheridan crafts one of his worst projects to date. Go to Full Review

If you don’t care for [Taylor Sheridan's] previous efforts, though? Well, it’s probably not a bad idea to skip the Kingstown exit while driving I-75. Go to Full Review

Edward F 4d Heavy, very serious, many jaw-drop moments. Well worth the time. Surprise, surprise - critics again show they are irrelevant on something audience generally enjoy. I and my parents loved this, then I watched it again with a friend, and he loved it. Yet another example of why the RT score needs to be "popcornmeter", NOT the critics foolish posturings. See more Reviewer 2. @Reviewer24 Dec 31 Great show! Keeps you engaged the whole time. See more Alain E @AlainE Dec 25 I am with the critics on this one. Not convincing from the first scene. An adult pays a little kid to throw a tennis ball filled with drugs over a prison wall. I guess the thought is that if a child throws the ball the guards will not be suspicious. Perfect logic. Supposedly seasons 3 and 4 are better, but I am not wasting hours to find out. See more Young S. @YoungStevie Dec 10 What did the ritucs say. Sorry, I can’t say the actual word apparently. The point is they hated it and that’s reason enough to check it out. Turns out to be a terrific show. Are there flaws? Of course, but overall it’s one of the best shows right now. See more Don Lendoiro Dec 3 Los tres primeros episodios no te Ia claro en que consistía la serie , a partir del cuarto todo queda claro y realmente merece la pena verla es bastante buena See more John A Nov 17 This is another show where clearly the critics are once again completely wrong and the viewers like me disagree with them. I rarely will watch a show or movie that the critics like, they seem to be totally out of touch with the average viewer these days. The main reason I started watching is because of Jeremy Renner, the 2nd reason is because of Taylor Sheridan, the guy is a freaking genius and not a bad actor. See more Read all reviews
