Melrose Place: Season 1 (2009 - 2010)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Melrose Place remains as trashy as ever -- and its fast pace, skillful storytelling, and attractive cast still add up to a diverting guilty pleasure.

The new Melrose? has no ambitions other than to divert and titillate viewers. And it does that well.

It seems a statement of the obvious to call the new Melrose trash, but a reviewer must observe certain formalities.

It's still not good, mind you, but it's more honest and enthusiastic about its badness, you know?

Let me just say what a pleasure it is to watch deliciously sleazy drama performed by professional actors, instead of the amateurs on "reality" shows.

And so I "like" the new Melrose Place, in that I think it has the potential to be as addictive, and phony, as a can of Pringles potato crisps.

This one is stylish, smartly produced and has a very appealing cast. Fans will fall in love all over again.

It captures the depraved spirit of the original series to fine effect. While all the drama seems a little quainter this time around, the elements that made Melrose Place such a delicious guilty pleasure back in the '90s are all still here.

If Sydney and Michael Mancini are all that Melrose Place means to you, perhaps this new version will suffice as a guilty pleasure. If you lack the sufficient built-in nostalgia, though, it's just another bad CW soap.

It won't disappoint original MP fans and is likely to create a whole new Melrose generation.

Aug 12, 2013 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

I can't say yet whether the new Melrose Place will reach the same lunatic heights of its predecessor. But the fact that the show is so unapologetic about aspiring to be a water-cooler nighttime soap? I have to respect that a little.
