Dwight Hendricks is a quirky police detective in Memphis, Tenn., who enjoys an intimate connection to the city, a deep passion for its blues music scene and a loving relationship with his mother. While his instincts as a detective are never questioned by his demanding new boss, Lt. Tanya Rice, she is bothered by the relaxed manner with which he carries out his duties. It's Dwight's Memphis state of mind, and perhaps once Lt. Rice sees him perform a song or two at his favorite hangout, she'll begin to see things his way, too.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The only thing separating Memphis Beat from other cop dramas is that it's set in such a rich, music-drenched location -- and that just might be good enough.

Although the show has some glimmers of promise - mainly thanks to star Jason Lee's ability to ooze genteel testosterone and deadpan sarcasm - it seems lost in an identity crisis bogged down by too many cop-show cliches, and not even the fun ones. Go to Full Review

Instead, it's an uninspired, assembly-line police show - one that had me forgetting about its existence even as I was still watching the pilot episode. Go to Full Review

The mystery here is passable, although there's nothing to distinguish it from the dozens of Law & Order knock-offs that populate the airwaves. Go to Full Review

The problem is, it's a cop procedural, and the only thing separating it from 99 other dull cop procedurals on TV right now is its locale. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, TNT's Memphis Beat rejects most tried and true cop show formulas and creates something all-together detached and bland. Go to Full Review

There is nothing new in Memphis Beat, except the location and the unique art design. The characters are out of Cop Show 101. Go to Full Review

06/16/2020 From TNT comes the off-beat cop drama Memphis Beat. Season 1 follows Detective Dwight Hendricks as he adjusts to a new, by the book Lieutenant and his mother's new shady boyfriend. Starring Jason Lee, Alfre Woodard, and DJ Qualls, the show has a pretty solid cast; Lee in particular does a good job at capturing the flavor and tone of the series. And some interesting guest stars make appearances, including Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi. Additionally, the show goes to some effort to homage Memphis' ties to soul and blues music; naming episode titles after songs and ending with a song performed by Hendricks (though it's clearly lip synced). While only 10-episodes, Season 1 of Memphis Beat delivers a fresh take on the cop genre that has its own unique charm. See more 10/07/2019 I loved this show!!! Hated when it didn't comeback on! Would love to buy it on DVD though. See more Read all reviews
