Critics Consensus

The only thing separating Memphis Beat from other cop dramas is that it's set in such a rich, music-drenched location -- and that just might be good enough.

The setting and the musical references seem oddly artificial, right down to Lee's stage performance, for which his voice has been dubbed.

A by-the-book cop show without much bite or heft. But it's got Memphis and Lee.

Since this is Memphis we're talking about, Memphis Beat won't run out of great music anytime soon. If all goes well, it also won't run out of story.

Jun 22, 2010 | Full Review…

Although the show has some glimmers of promise - mainly thanks to star Jason Lee's ability to ooze genteel testosterone and deadpan sarcasm - it seems lost in an identity crisis bogged down by too many cop-show cliches, and not even the fun ones.

The mystery here is passable, although there's nothing to distinguish it from the dozens of Law & Order knock-offs that populate the airwaves.

Buckets of sweat and an emphasis on blues music aside, there's not much to distinguish the shopworn detective procedural formula of Memphis Beat.

Jun 22, 2010 | Full Review…

The problem is, it's a cop procedural, and the only thing separating it from 99 other dull cop procedurals on TV right now is its locale.

Jun 9, 2020 | Full Review…

Unfortunately, TNT's Memphis Beat rejects most tried and true cop show formulas and creates something all-together detached and bland.

Jun 9, 2020 | Rating: 6.5/10 | Full Review…

Instead, it's an uninspired, assembly-line police show - one that had me forgetting about its existence even as I was still watching the pilot episode.

Jun 9, 2020 | Full Review…

There is nothing new in Memphis Beat, except the location and the unique art design. The characters are out of Cop Show 101.

Jun 9, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

[A] show that lacks any connection to the city it's supposed to love. Talk about a kick in the ribs.

Jun 9, 2020 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

It's a generic show, but it's likeably generic, and once it settles in tonally, it could effectively provide a lot of hours of time-killing light entertainment over the next three months.

Audience Reviews for Memphis Beat: Season 1

From TNT comes the off-beat cop drama Memphis Beat. Season 1 follows Detective Dwight Hendricks as he adjusts to a new, by the book Lieutenant and his mother's new shady boyfriend. Starring Jason Lee, Alfre Woodard, and DJ Qualls, the show has a pretty solid cast; Lee in particular does a good job at capturing the flavor and tone of the series. And some interesting guest stars make appearances, including Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi. Additionally, the show goes to some effort to homage Memphis' ties to soul and blues music; naming episode titles after songs and ending with a song performed by Hendricks (though it's clearly lip synced). While only 10-episodes, Season 1 of Memphis Beat delivers a fresh take on the cop genre that has its own unique charm.
