Memphis Beat: Season 1 (2010)

Critic Consensus: The only thing separating Memphis Beat from other cop dramas is that it's set in such a rich, music-drenched location -- and that just might be good enough.

Tv Season Info

A crime drama focusing on offbeat Memphis detective Dwight Hendricks (Jason Lee), a Southern charmer with a passion for his city and blues music. But this Southern charmer's loose crime-fighting manner clashes with his disciplined boss Lt. Tanya Rice (Alfre Woodard) . Spinning around the detective's life are his spirited mother Paula (Celia Weston), his overly sensitive partner Detective Charles "Whitehead" White (Sam Hennings) and police officer Davey Sutton (DJ Qualls) who is new to the force. The setting and the musical references seem oddly artificial, right down to Lee's stage performance, for which his voice has been dubbed.

A by-the-book cop show without much bite or heft. But it's got Memphis and Lee.

Since this is Memphis we're talking about, Memphis Beat won't run out of great music anytime soon. If all goes well, it also won't run out of story.

It's a generic show, but it's likeably generic, and once it settles in tonally, it could effectively provide a lot of hours of time-killing light entertainment over the next three months.

Part of the problem is that in order to understand why Memphis matters so much, viewers need to get a sense of place from what's on screen: ts first episode goes for superficial cues instead of specific depths.

Except for the setting, there really isn't much to distinguish Memphis Beat from hundreds of cop shows past and present. As a matter of fact, it's far more like them than it is different.
