Men in Trees features intelligent writing and beautifully nuanced characters, neither of which is found on the small screen in great abundance.

On paper, this single-city-girl-moves-to- the-wilds-of-Alaska-to-study-men-in-the-wild sounds like a romantic comedy winner. But [Anne] Heche is more pathetic than loveable as she totters about on stilettos, all at sea in a world without sushi.

Due to a highly unlikable lead character, this Northern Exposure rip off would be hard to keep watching week after week.

[Anne] Heche is wonderful as Frist and there are lots of loveable characters.

Anne Heche is a joy as Marin, squeezing every juicy bit out of [Jenny] Bicks' snappy script.

[Anne] Heche is not an appealing star... On top of that, this show has neither the surreal intrigue and strong characters of Northern Exposure, nor the sparkling wit of Sex and the City.

The pilot gets no points for originality and several demerits for sheer implausibility. But lead Anne Heche brings a welcome edge to her role as newly downtrodden relationship coach Marin Frist.

Men in Trees lets Heche remind everyone what a versatile, charming actress she can be... She could use some surprising storytelling to go along with the smart talk.

Heche seems to fumble for an internal switch to turn on that light (you practically hear the relieved little click when she finds it). Give her time, though, and she might shine like the aurora borealis.

Heche's sunny performance is the best thing about Men in Trees... But the whole fish-out-of-water-in-Alaska conceit was covered by Northern Exposure, which also had the benefit of more clearly defined, original characters.

Heche, a talented actress, isn't really made for this kind of material; there's a prickly edge to her, and romantic comedies require a delicate balance of vulnerability and pluck.

Men in Trees has potential, but for the moment it suggests a different road sign: "Thin ice."
January 3, 2019
Like peanut butter and chocolate, two TV taste treats -- the fish out of water, and the therapist/advice columnist who can't follow her own advice -- get jumbled together in one bland confection.
January 3, 2019
When you build a show around a female character or a group of female characters, there's no reason they have to alternate between delusional independence and hopeless vulnerability.
January 3, 2019
Embraces so many sexual and cultural stereotypes, they might as well grow on trees.

January 3, 2019
Heche is a funny proposition, strange but likable... Marin suits her well, and she's supported by a fine and mostly unfamiliar cast.
January 3, 2019
Creator Jenny Bicks, still coasting on her scripts for Sex and the City, has yet to figure out how to connect women on the couch with the women in her scripts.
January 3, 2019
Borrows much too heavily from Northern Exposure for the rural setting, so that Elmo is little more than yet another quaint, quirky, and cutesy TV town.
January 3, 2019
Men in Trees makes you want to climb one, just to get out of the way of the smirks.
January 3, 2019
A halfhearted, feebleminded attempt at a situation comedy about that eternal and ever-fascinating struggle, the battle of the sexes.
