Critic Reviews for Merry Happy Whatever Season 1

All Critics (9) | Top Critics (3)

It would be wonderful to report that Merry Happy Whatever managed to overcome the cliches inherent in its controlling-papa set-up, its collection of children and in-laws, and its painfully obvious holiday scenarios... Unfortunately, it is not to be.

Top Critic

Every strained premise, every exchange of dialogue, every dopey misunderstanding, every contrived grab for a heart-tugging moment is straight out of a badly dated sitcom playbook from 30 or 40 years ago.

Dec 2, 2019 | Rating: 1.5/4 | Full Review…

To say that you've seen basically every key incident in Merry Happy Whatever in a previous holiday film or TV episode would be understating how preprogrammed every episode feels.

Dec 2, 2019 | Full Review…

Merry Happy Whatever isn't a terrible show, but they're the people you'd want to leave as soon as the clock strikes midnight of any particular holiday.

Jan 23, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

While the show doesn't seem any different than your typical Christmas family comedy at first, stick to it and you'll find that it's a sitcom with a lot to say.

Dec 6, 2019 | Full Review…

Unfortunately, Merry Happy Whatever falls short of both the fuzzy feelings and the holiday spectacular I'd hoped for.

Dec 2, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

Flat and uninventive, the plots are predictable, the jokes are tired and unfunny.

Nov 30, 2019 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

Merry Happy Whatever manages to feel just like going home for Christmas-in all the cozy and some of the awkward ways.

Nov 29, 2019 | Full Review…

It's eight episodes, less like a Lifetime Christmas movie than Meet the Parents.

Audience Reviews for Merry Happy Whatever: Season 1

  • Oct 17, 2020
You know despite the reviews I really liked this show, I though it had a great cast of characters with some simple sitcom family problems.
  • Jan 13, 2020
It was enjoyable. Acting was ok, but the storyline was interesting and funny. One thing that was very strange was how the dad was not open minded to anything like a different religion or someone being gay or the guy being a musician, but he had no problem with dating a black woman and no one even thought that was unusual for a man who was close minded to everything

Thinking this was a Christmas show, we watched, Couldn't see where it was going, but now as we watch it, we see it as a comedy show with really good cast! Hopefully, it will catch on!
  • Dec 31, 2019
It seemed like good old fashioned family entertainment. No bad language, no nudity, just family tv. Reminded me of some of my family traditions.
  • Dec 29, 2019
It's finally a decent Netflix sitcom. The show seems to fit the modern American family well.
  • Dec 28, 2019
It may be good for 9-13 age group. It feels very Disney channel. With that being said, I'm an adult and found myself quickly losing interest until I wasn't even watching. I wouldn't even watch this to go to bed at night. Played out storyline.
  • Dec 27, 2019
Funny and relatable comedy about family dynamics! Some parts are definitely exaggerated but the different personas are developed in a way that any audience member can identify with an on-screen character.
  • Dec 26, 2019
Not good at all. So much overacting it is hard to watch. The grandchildren (boys of Don's only son) are absolutely ATROCIOUS as well as Emmy. She is God-awful. It is a shame because Dennis Quaid is a great actor and I thought he did a good job but writing is just not there. Use your time for something else

Was there a pilot? No one in their right mind would pay for a second episode. Netflix can't be this desperate for programming.
