Thematically, it is suffused with the kind of hope that emerges from healthy distrust of formulaic piety. And if it manages to make you uneasy, you might feel the better for it.

With its melodramatic storytelling and excess of side characters who break the show's focus, Messiah nearly runs out of ideas once it's done establishing a zeitgeist none of us have seen before.

It is by turns exciting, dull, plausible and ridiculous. And if you can suffer past the extended dawdling in the desert -- or deserts; there's more than one -- it will likely keep you engaged to the end.

All of this is told so blandly and straightfacedly as to deny any metaphorical reading or symbolic resonance.

If you're not on the fence and you're eager to watch Messiah...enjoy. My saying it's a badly made show doesn't make it exist any less.

Messiah introduces a character who might be divine, then keeps elbowing him off screen to focus on meandering subplots.
