Midnight Mass

Critics Consensus

An ambitious meditation on grief and faith that is as gorgeous as it is unsettling, Midnight Mass's slow boil is a triumph of terror that will leave viewers shaking - and thinking - long after the credits roll.

Just like Hill House & Bly Manor, it looked great, great cast, exceptional scary creatures, & hokie Hallmark Channel ending. Loved it. Once I'm on the train, I'm down for the whole ride & Mike has yet to kick me off no matter how trite or sentimental the wrap up. I get the knock on this one for the extended monologues, but I enjoyed them. I only found myself checking out on one of them (Erin's initial response to speculation of death experience) & generally loved the over-reaching mid-brow philosophizing' of big topics like religion, death, etc. The only regret was the missed opportunity for the resurrected to find a working turntable in the rubble & put on some Neil Diamond to play them out to oblivion instead of singing a hymn at the end. Really fkn fun ride & one if the best vampire creatures seen on screen since Nosferatu.

It was actually very good until the 5th episode, but, then towards the end of the 6th and the entire 7th episode, a lot of forced/non-sense events made it feel silly and extremely bizarre, dumb and amateurish. It seems the direction didn't know exactly how to wrap it and created these absurd/insane discordant abundance of events leading to a cathartic apocalyptic end... It killed the series...

I am super into Mike Flanagan in general. I thought it went a little too over-the-top in the last couple episodes. However, after watching a review of the show by my favorite YouTube critic "Amanda the Jedi", her perspective gave me a deeper liking and respect for the show overall.

If "Doctor Sleep" and "...Hill House" are treaties on generational trauma and grief in the guise of ghost stories, then this is a stellar examination of faith through the lens of...well, I won't spoil it, but if you've looked around over the last couple of years and feel out of place, that you were not in line for the Kool-Aid, then this is for you. If not, then I guess you can go back to picking your nose.

A really amazing show from beginning to finish. Very well done and beautifully acted.

Started out good but by episode 3 the pace went to a crawl. I made it through ep. 4 and quit watching. just too slow and boring. I could probably watch the last episode and not miss a thing but I really don't care how it ends now.

It is good but could have been 3 episodes. Really drags for long sections.

The best new series I've seen this year. The music was simply amazing, been awhile since this former Christian cried with a hymn as the background music. But the music was just used amazingly. The dialogues were just amazing. So much honesty to many of them. The only critique I have was some of the aging makeup early on. Wish they'd figured out to do that in a way that was better. It was very distracting early on. This show definitely needs to be in consideration for next years limited series awards during awards season.

Super long monologues, weird cuts, weird overuse of footage, weird crane shots where they didn't belong. Order of important events is OK... I did not give a fuck about any of the characters until the last two episodes when the shoehorned context between the rest of the characters. Super shitty logic for story... Needed a 2nd or 3rd pass.

"Midnight Mass" is the best written show I've seen since "The Leftovers." I'm not really a big fan of horror, but this series blew me away. If you can suspend your disbelief, it's probably one of the most accurate depictions of religious cult in fiction you'll ever see or read.
