They built the characters but it didn't go anywhere and it didn't contribute to the story. I tried my hardest to become invested, but the story repeatedly lost my attention. The series leans heavily into a religious cult atmosphere, with the devil and sacrilegious themes becoming major parts of the narrative. The biggest problem for me was the pacing. The story felt extremely heavy and, at times, painfully slow. There were multiple moments when the fast-forward button became very tempting because I felt like the series was spending too much time on certain elements without giving enough momentum to keep me engaged. There were also moments where characters would disappear or the story would suddenly shift directions, making it harder to follow everything that was happening. When a series loses your attention during an episode, it becomes difficult to regain that investment because you can miss important details that affect what comes next. See more Michael V @RT41146758 Aug 14, 2026 As a former Catholic (and alter server), it was actually satisfying to see a show that comes extremely close to displaying an accurate representation of Catholic masses. There's so many movies and shows that clearly take no effort to give a realistic portrayal. The show is a very slow burn for sure, but what's discussed isn't fluff or unnecessary yapping. There's substance and meaning to what the characters talk about. The script is VERY good. A huge plus is that the kinda main "villain" is teased just the right amount. The show really does a great job with the build up. There's some awesome direction when it's showcased. Definitely one of the best vampire pieces I've seen in a very long time. Unconventional woke characterization aside, it's painful to spend 10 episodes watching the miserable lives of almost all the characters as they look for redemption. I can't remember any other movies or TV series with more conversation conducted in whispers or in a self-confessional manner. A normal movie length is long enough to make another interesting Flanagan movie without the unnecessary, long-developing unsympathetic character arcs. I tried very hard to give it a go, for I enjoy Flanagan's other works very much, but my patience finally ran out, and I decided to watch something else, although I had almost finished the second-to-last episode. The strongest heroes are women, minorities, Muslim, and a lesbian, while all white men are dense, evil, oblivious or irrelevant.
