Miracle Workers: Season 1 Reviews

January 27, 2020
Despite the epic premise, this was essentially an amusingly oddball workplace comedy. It showcased the quirky comedic talents of both Radcliffe and Buscemi, who were excellent.

The concept never comes together even with a talented cast and the resulting show is an unfunny comedy that's as dour as it is underwhelming.

The real scene-stealer is Steve Buscemi as the man upstairs, a coup of casting combined with expert characterization from a veteran actor.

Full of grace it's not.

A television series that grapples, albeit lightly, with subjects that have confounded religious scholars and philosophers for centuries ideally should be smart and a few steps ahead of its audience.

Ultimately, the small miracle of "Miracle Workers" is that it launches past any obvious gimmicks to favor incisive punchlines that find humor and warmth in the most unusual - and undeniably fascinating - places.

For this extremely fallible lord, Buscemi couldn't be more perfect.

For all its tickling blips of farce and droll bits of drive-by theology, Miracle Workers is fundamentally corny, which may be a proof of its sincerity. It's a meaningfully honest response to a senseless universe.

The laughs aren't plentiful enough, the ideas aren't exciting enough, and the story isn't gripping enough.

Radcliffe is delightful as the dorky co-worker who ends up making coffee for everyone else because he's such a pushover. He continues to show his range in a role that's new to his "Harry Potter" fans but feels natural.

Even when it isn't particularly funny, or when the humor is unpleasant, it is generally cheerful and always nicely acted.

Still, there's an underlying sweetness to the series that helps it get past the rough patches. Thanks to that, "Miracle Workers" is a show that works, mostly, in not-so-mysterious ways.

A show that you keep waiting to click into gear, to get funnier, smarter, more enjoyable.

After sitting through almost four hours of "Miracle Workers"...you may come to the same conclusion I did. This joke runs long and eventually dry, too. One season is more than enough.

Still, Miracle Workers is often unforgivably small-minded - which could be its point.

Miracle Workers is not bad, it's just trying to be either too cute or too clever and doesn't have much urgency.

Miracle Workers may have better luck, based on the star-power alone - but the show would benefit from injecting a bit more dark humor into its lighthearted antics.

Miracle Workers is ultimately a love letter to free will.
