Critics Consensus

Blessed with a terrific ensemble, Miss Austen does right by the celebrated author even as it lives in the shadow of her most accomplished works.

“Miss Austen” beautifully demonstrates, however, that despite a loyal sister’s posthumous letter-burning, an author’s words can live forever. Go to Full Review

Ferran brings an insightful, self-aware and sometimes cheeky version of the woman to life in each scene, creating a memorable auteur whose observational skills resulted in such an astute collection of female stories. Go to Full Review

If you can get past the mannered stiffness typical of Masterpiece fare, it loosens up as it evolves into a perceptive and affectionate portrait of the kind of life Austen lived but barely wrote about. Go to Full Review

...the miniseries stands out for its good setting, and for raising, perhaps inadvertently, the dilemma of who owns the legacy of famous people, which is often disputed by their families and biographers...[Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Edward L @Glyndower 1d Another tedious drama inspired by Jane Austen, almost as dull and badly structured as the author's own works, with the compulsory ridiculous woke casting (a black doctor in the early 19th Century!). Don't' waste your time on this anymore than you should on Austen's repetitive and badly written novels. See more Bonny B Aug 10 Well acted, however, the characters were poorly developed as I could never keep straight who all these people were and what were their relationships to one another, a weakness which was not helped by all the flipping forward and back in time. It ended up being a jumbled mess of bits and pieces of this and that. As a former student of English Literature with an emphasis of the Victorian period, it most certainly captured the more joyless, morose mannerisms and etiquette of the times. See more K A Jul 6 Based on Gill Hornsby's novel about Jane Austen's life and her family. The story is told from her sister, Cassandra's perspective. In real life, Cassandra burned most of Jane's letters after her death so the letters are fictional. But they seem to have the spirit of Jane and what we know of her family. I enjoyed the story, the scenery and the costumes. See more Lucas G Jun 11 I lost interest very fast. I have read everything of Jane Austen including her letters to her sister, and the writing is really lame. On top of it there is this modern approach that was constantly taking me out of the period and mistakes that made no sense. Like why is she reading letters that supposedly tell events where both recipients where present? Why do they dress exsctly the same style in moments that happened decades apart? A black surgeon too lol… It is a show more for Bridgerton fans and not very demanding people, not for true Austen lovers. See more Lady C Jun 7 Too much crying, not enough laughter. Excellent performances, and clever referencing of Jane Austen's characters and plots, but ultimately you're left with the same hunger for more of the author's wit that might have led you to watch in the first place, and to agree with the script's defiant self-critique: "Everything one needs to know about Jane Austen is found within the pages of her novels".
