Good acting. Great writing. Human characters played by amazing actors. That might be the one twist network TV hasn't tried quite often enough.

Even when the show tries to get heartfelt and honest, it doesn't get preachy or annoying. It keeps its messages subtle and doesn't overdo any sort of normalcy.

It is lifted out of the ordinary by a steady stream of jagged quips; some wonderfully staged set pieces; and performances that struck a finely wrought balance between caricature and naturalism.

It ran as a series of vignettes whose punchlines were often not quite strong enough. Still, as with any sketch show, there were some hits among misses... I'd tune in again, just for Ty Burrell's "cool dad"

In some ways Modern Family is so reflective of where many American families find themselves these days, much of the humor stems from the audience recognizing some of the mistrust and isolation present in their own marital and parental relationships.

Our quick glimpses of the characters just being themselves suggests we'll see neurotic, blockheaded, charming, poignant and funny. In a sitcom, funny is good.

[Ed] O'Neill's presence on Modern Family signals that this highly agreeable new sitcom, upscale though it is, follows Married ... With Children's line of pop commentary, singing America as it is, deliberately off-key.

Easily the new season's best comedy pilot, Modern Family deftly serves up laughs on multiple levels.

It's been awhile since any half-hour comedy came blazing out of the gate to declare itself with such speed and so many layers of pure seduction as Modern Family.

The writers and producers have found sharp new angles for tales of the great American family, and they juxtapose them in smart, savory ways.
