Smart and moving.

Mostly, Modern Love treads that fine line between sweet but not sickly, funny but with depth.

...while I can't help but think many of these stories could be more "modern," what's most significant is that Modern Love isn't always focused on romantic love.

Tthere is something to like in these eight stories of love, and if you're in a sentimental or whimsical mood, then this could satisfy.

A steady rain falls in each vignette - but in keeping with the romanticized vision of Modern Love, it's a Hollywood-style rain, the kind of rain that makes everyone and everything look better.

You'd groan if that particular fantasy weren't so potent. There's no question that Modern Love is often ridiculous; love is like that.

A show you can watch as a nice respite from heavier Peak TV fare.

Modern Love could be about more than love. At its best moments, and in its best episodes, it is about more than that, but it's almost as if those moments escape from a show determined to keep them hidden away.

If a particular episode speaks to you (and I suspect at least one will), then that's great, but the storytelling is a little muted. They're calibrated to be sweet, and not much more than that.

"Modern Love," when it works, provides the kind of soothing comfort supplied by an inviting armchair, a warm fire, or a mug of hot tea on a chilly night.

The acting is terrific throughout, making it hard to resist the urge to snuggle up and have a good sob at all the beautiful people embracing their most beautiful feelings in their beautiful clothes beside their beautiful bookshelves.

It's A-list and painfully classy, but over eight episodes it only rarely lifts off, and instead settles into an oddly bland, will-this-do middle ground.

It's sweet, wonderfully musical, and populated by scores of attractive people. It's just a shame Modern Love feels so...sanitized.

Despite its varying trials and travails, Modern Love strives for an overall feel-good vibe that isn't always entirely earned.

Perhaps most egregiously of all, Modern Love, the television show, sands down the sharp, cutting, and often brutally introspective edges of Modern Love, the column.

At a time when conflict rages across the media, there's something appealing about pulling up the comforter and falling into "Modern Love."
