What to Know

Critics Consensus

Commanding the camera's full attention amidst the French countryside, Clive Owen makes for a mesmerizingly craggy Sam Spade even as the series around him struggles to live up to its hallowed lineage.

Despite its brevity, “Monsieur Spade” lets its world unfurl slowly, with continental ease. Go to Full Review

The one-time Oscar nominee so perfectly embodies Spade’s spiritual exhaustion and profound pessimism that you wonder why you’re not loving every single second. The culprit is the execution—and, perhaps, in the show’s most cutting twist, Owen himself. Go to Full Review

Monsieur Spade feels like it should be wittier, and livelier, than this. It’s not terrible, but it’s a big disappointment, given the idea and the people involved. Go to Full Review
Akos Peterbencze The Screen 02/16/2024
An original story with top-notch writing, directing, and acting wrapped in romanticized nostalgia in a virtually extinct genre rarely feels this fresh and vibrant. Go to Full Review

Teens might find this story slow-moving and confusing, though those teens who've explored the detective genre will relate more readily. Go to Full Review

The pace is glacial, made even more so because it takes so long to get to its unsatisfying resolution. So much potential wasted with such a good cast. Truly a case of style over substance. Go to Full Review

S T Dec 27 Loved the background music, script, all the actors except 1, Virginia Dell, a black actress, in the end who comes from no where and resolves the mystery. Dell was a DEI insert and really did not belong. See more DeadSeaGulls Aug 11 It's a hammy detective noir, and Owen nails it. Great supporting cast with very few exceptions. Some of the criticism here seems like it's come from people who think this is somehow supposed to be more refined and artsy than it's genre source inspiration. It's a great balance of suspense and humor. I love the overly witty dialog, and I enjoyed the camera work and direction. It is what it is, and doesn't pretend to be something else. See more Rev. Dennis M Jun 17 It's a serviceable enough whodunnit with a nice international flair. Good chance to listen to some French, among other languages. Clive Owen is understated to the point that his deadpan presentation occasionally comes across as just dead. Denis Ménochet as the inspector in the little French town rather steals the show. The leisurely pace does not adversely affect the watchability. But the last couple episodes engineer so many artificial plot twists, the series eventually twists off its own head and the brains fall out. See more Anna Marie M May 24 Everyone talks in different languages. The sub titles move too fast to read. The story would be good but trying to follow the jumping back and forth through time using subtitles was insane. Such a shame. See more Cletus P 01/19/2025 Nearly put me to sleep. Boring, low energy, confusing. No thanks See more Tom F 12/31/2024 I expected to like this but it never really popped for me, maybe because the plot was so convoluted. See more Read all reviews
