What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ella Beatty, Sarah Paulson, and Rebecca Hall remain trapped in an ill-fitted, uninspiring new rendition of Monster that doesn't bother to give The Lizzie Borden Story anything interesting to say.

Audience Says

More whimsical than historical, the latest installment of Monster takes ambitious anachronistic swings, that are only partially redeemed by its savvy cast.

The series truly goes off the rails with ghastly apparitions, forced ties and imagined conversations between the killers. Rather than revealing anything new about these women, the series forces them together in a shared history of violence. Go to Full Review
Geordie Gray The Australian Oct 6, 2026
Like every season of Monster, it is lurid, tasteless, overstuffed and about as subtle as a thwack from dear Lizzie’s axe. And you, like I, will probably tear through the whole bloody thing. Go to Full Review
Judy Berman TIME Magazine Sep 24, 2026
Lizzie Borden is such a massive remix, mingling facts with half-truths and rumors and fabrications, it barely matters which detail is which. Go to Full Review

Rest in peace, freaks. No matter your crimes, you didn’t deserve to be Murphy-ed, postmortem. Go to Full Review

While previous series have been direct adaptations of real events—trials, television appearances—nothing like that was possible here, unless the photographs of the bodies count. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Russell A @Rallen117 1 day ago This was laughably bad. Someone wrote this isn’t a show for people expecting the truth but it’s how we should all look at the Lizzie Borden murders. We should look at them as a completely fabricated story to fit a feminist narrative? No thanks I’ll stick to reality. And good TV. This is the furthest away from both. See more Ash M @TheMovieCritic305 2 days ago I genuinely cannot understand why this series has received such harsh criticism. The acting was outstanding, the storytelling was incredible, and the deeper message about women's rights, oppression and societal change was brilliantly portrayed. Yes, some parts were fictionalised, but historical dramas aren't documentaries. Creative storytelling is what makes them so powerful, and this series stayed true to its core themes and message. For me, it was thought provoking, emotional and beautifully executed. It's a shame critics seem to have overlooked what made this series so exceptional. Seriously underrated and deserving of far more recognition. A solid 8/10! See more Jake . @Jxborden 2 days ago It’s not very accurate but it’s still really good and fun just binged it all See more kasielnoah T @RT42180512 2 days ago A magnificent series. Three brilliant performances by the women! Absolutely unconventional in terms of the script, direction, and storytelling. A wonderful sense of humor. Highly recommended! See more Heather J @Harsh8227 2 days ago I have seen enough Ryan Murphy to not expect factual story telling so the mostly made up nature of this didn’t surprise or bother me. I thought the acting was generally good, the settings and costumes great and I loved the soundtrack. The only think I really disliked was inserting Aileen Wuornos into this. Sarah Paulson’s horrific portrayal aside, why was this necessary? I fast forwarded through all these segments. Would have been so much better without this. Maybe in your next project put a bit of history into the show. See more Jorge P @RT28561375 3 days ago The acting and the cast are great. The story and filming are horrible, specially from chapter 4 till the end. See more Read all reviews
