Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) 08/21/2020
This brutal, brittle, occasionally brilliant English comedy does for motherhood what Catastrophe did for marriage. Which is to say it could put the uninitiated off the idea for life. Go to Full Review
Deborah Ross The Mail on Sunday (UK) 10/14/2019
3/5
The danger with Motherland is that it will go too big story-wise, when it should be small story-wise but big observations-wise, if that makes sense. So how much do I like it now? Not as much as I once did. But still: no mum left behind! Go to Full Review
Rachel Cooke New Statesman 10/10/2019
This show is so clever and so funny. Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ 04/20/2020
This British look at the trials and traumas of middle-class motherhood might just be the funniest show currently screening on television. Go to Full Review
John Boland Irish Independent 10/15/2019
Yes, it remains quite a funny series, though perhaps not as funny as it should be given the talents involved. Go to Full Review
Euan Ferguson Observer (UK) 10/14/2019
Subtler than Sharon Horgan's Catastrophe, with input from a further three writers, this is at most turns a joy, although occasionally the type of joy felt upon the absence of pain about 40 seconds after stepping on a piece of Lego in your bare feet. Go to Full Review

Brendan M @RT76082430 03/19/2025 Another solid offering. Not the same degree of funny as season 1, but quality all the same. See more Michael W @MichaelW00 06/01/2023 Still just as funny, excellent characters, perfect comedy acting (with some serious moments!) See more Dave C @RT09838700 05/12/2021 Stronger than S01, for sure. Much slicker now the characters and their stories are established, and the comedy flows more easily See more 02/28/2021 Motherland suffers from having a central character who is constantly stressed because she can't mind her kids due to work. Not a particularly amusing construct, but sadly the actress lacks comic timing or any qualities which might make you root for her. Far and away the funniest character is Diane Morgen who charms with her dead-pan Northern schtick. The emasculated bloke who sucks up to all the mums is tedious and creepy, I don't understand why he's in it. Middle-class mums who live in nice London victorian homes with massive open plan kitchens are done-to-death in recent English sitcoms and I want to give their privileged pouts a smack. See more Cyrano d @Cyrano 09/15/2020 After a near flawless first season (the funniest British show for a decade), season two lacks the energy of the original. Something has changed... Have producers been fiddling with the writing in a misguided attempt to increase its appeal? Whatever has happened, the performances appear more rigid, the jokes aren't as real or edgy and a truly funny, relatable show, brimming with acerbic wit has turned into dramedy. We've given up after 3 episodes. Such a disappointment. See more 08/09/2020 very good, very good writing See more Read all reviews
