Critic Reviews for Mr Inbetween Season 2

All Critics (8) | Top Critics (5)

Edgerton, as director, achieves a delicate counterpoint between the ironic and the gruesome, no easy task -- it is really very funny.

It's smart, wickedly funny, and, in Season 2, purposeful.

A dark, glittering gem.

The huge improvement from an already solid first season to this tremendous second one has me wondering if Mr. Inbetween has another big leap in it.

The secret sauce of Mr Inbetween that's essential is that the show is funny. You can't have a dark heart like this without leavening it with humor.

There is much in Mr Inbetween that delights, despite the often grim context of its storytelling. Ryan plays Ray with great emotional precision. He has a certainty which is perhaps unusual in television, where prevarication is the preferred character note.

There was plainly nothing better on TV in 2019.

Season 2 elevates the series on nearly every level, from Ryan's writing and acting to the performances of the supporting cast and the directing of Nash Edgerton.

Audience Reviews for Mr Inbetween: Season 2

Fantastic short form storytelling that anyone can enjoy. Scott Ryan, the cast and crew deliver an experience I've yet to find anywhere else.

Mr. Inbetween avoids the sophomore slump, with a second season that only augments the gratifying pulp-fiction and character-development of the first year. Ray Shoesmith remains as lovable a killer as ever, as while the violent set-pieces are always impressive (and cautiously built up to in the narrative), the show's real character comes out in its human elements. The scenes with Ray and his family members (namely his daughter, and sick brother) are often funny and sweet at the same time, and the season ultimately ends on its most heartbreaking scene yet, putting it in sublime territory for next year. One of the best crime-fiction shows currently airing!

Easily one of the three best TV shows I've ever seen, maybe the best. Only one problem: The eppies are only a half hour long. With the show's frighteningly good writing, they could make hour long shows and it might be ever better. I could sit and watch this for 20 hours straight at least and drain the eskie of all its beverages and pretty much everything else besides. I haven't been this entertained in I don't know how long. So long I can't remember.

As good as the 1st season if not better. Amazing series.

I like the show since the first season seeing Ray and all the action what i mean here is the show is superb

Can't speak highly enough of this series, possibly the best TV I've ever seen. Raw, violent, funny, disturbing, relatable, Aussie af, at times deeply sad, always utterly absorbing. Season 1 took the hardcore yet fundamentally human hitman character at the heart of shoestring-budget Aussie movie 'The Magician' and expanded out his universe, revealing him to be a security guard, caring brother to a disabled man, and invested father (albeit divorced) of a little girl. Season 2 turns up the dark intensity of this anti-hero and the emotional power of the events he gets tangled up in, with certain episodes that leave you almost stunned, yet the scripting, acting and action not once slip into cliche or excess but remain flawlessly grounded in grubby everyday realism, taking place in the sort of stale living rooms, suburban driveways and middle-of-nowhere bush roads that feel intimately familiar to any Australian viewer. Absolutely brilliant show, can't recommend it enough.

The best 23 minutes on T.V by far
  • Nov 24, 2019
Season 2 continues with fresh and witty dark comedy mixed in with a handfuls of wholesome family moments that make this show so great. The shows simplicity is truly a breathe of fresh air in a world of shows trying to do to much.

Mr Inbetween is the best Australian drama in years. The subject matter is bleak but compelling. Superb.

Absolutely love this show, hope it gets picked up for future season, and wish it was an hour long!
