A nice slow simmer is well-suited to Gleeson's talents as an actor who doesn't mind taking his time in further molding a character with a gruff exterior and an old, buttered soul.

One thing's for sure so far: This season will be a lot more surreal than the first. It will take a few more episodes to see how this all works, but color me interested.

Lupe's Holly is an example of how an actor can, by actually inhabiting a role, make something better than what registers as a collection of occasionally endearing tics on the page... Lupe makes Holly funny, sweet, sad and surprisingly real.

[The] finale is a cracker, by the way, full of twists and turns, and bowing out in a way that will leave you know what happens next.

The program can still tell a tense, boiled down crime story with supernatural touches, it's just that this season requires a lot more patience.

Dec 13, 2018 | Full Review…

Mr. Mercedes may fumble a bit in the transition from hardboiled detective drama to supernatural sc-ifi, but the caliber of the performances and the commitment to character drama ensure that there's still plenty of reason to tune in.

It's these little touches, as much as the brilliantly realised and often violent set-pieces, that distinguish Mr Mercedes from most other dramas and that ensure I'll be keeping faith with it until Christmas time.

Whether it's because the actors feel a kinship when they get down to business or the writers get excited at the possibility of what Gleeson and Treadaway will do with their material is beside the point. They're electric.

Aug 23, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Though it's not always successful in what it's attempting to do (a fact that's a little more apparent in season 2), Mr. Mercedes is nevertheless entertaining and driven by compelling performances that it's worth seeking out.

The pop culture landscape is crowded with creepy imaginings of Stephen King... Crowded, yes, but it would be downright scary if viewers overlooked Season 2 of Mr. Mercedes.

Audience Reviews for Mr. Mercedes: Season 2

  • Nov 18, 2020
Excellent followup to Season 1. Both are excellent adaptions of King's novels and although I was at first disappointed that they skipped Finder Keepers and went straight to the third novel in the trilogy, this marvelous slow burn of stellar story telling keeps you engaged. The characters, good and evil are all engaging and well developed. The real horror is how the medical field continues to play Dr. Frankenstein only to unleash a monster they are fully aware of.

Don't like the switch to the supernatural at all. Stopped watching after 5 episodes. Horrible.
  • Dec 27, 2019
Not at all as good as first season and definitely not as good as the book. What is worse is that they skipped through the second book and jumped to the third and also missing out a lot of what makes your pulse go faster in the book. Somewhat lackluster script/adaption of the book.

I loved the first season, but this is simply not the same show at all. Massive waste of the potential that the great first season established. First season was an engaging, down to earth, amusing (and at times shocking) show which sucked you into its world entirely. A splendid modern detective tale with a fantastic lead, antagonist and supporting characters. This second season ditches ALL of that in favour of supernatural, mind control lunacy which turns the world of the show into a laughable farce. If the 1st season highlighted the best of Stephen Kings writing, the 2nd trumpets his very worst excesses. Even Brendon Gleeson can't save this tripe..
  • Nov 15, 2019
Not as good as season one, but still a great show. This season took a bit to get going but the mystery and intrigue was there. Again, solid acting and directing.
  • Nov 05, 2019
Mr Mercedes used to be a real-life gritty drama, AKA Season 1. Season 2 takes Season 1, throws it hard against a brick wall and then sprinkles on pixie dust to bring it back to life... The result is airy-fairy, mind-control/possession through the ether nonsense. With King as Executive Producer, Bender couldn't alas do a "Kubrick" to rescue a drowning script from a silly storyline.
  • May 24, 2019
Interesting but far less engaging 2nd season. I enjoyed it but it takes a long time to get going this season.
  • Nov 07, 2018
Brendan Gleeson was born for this role!
  • Sep 12, 2018
The best tv show ever no joke
  • Aug 29, 2018
Season 1 was great. Hopefully season 2 will be as good!
