4/5
We know Cathy is in pain -- we just do, from Manville's tender, nuanced, wry performance -- but such is her warmth she must attend to everyone else before getting round to herself. Go to Full Review
Ceri Radford Daily Telegraph (UK) 04/15/2019
It was less black humour, more the beige shade of a nice cup of tea; soothing and enjoyable, if lacking in bite. Go to Full Review
Sam Wollaston Guardian 04/15/2019
The characters are believable, three-dimensional ones (lovely performances, too, especially from Lesley Manville as Cathy and Lisa McGrillis as Kelly). Go to Full Review
Anne Brodie What She Said 01/04/2021
A squirmy comedy of manners and bittersweet satire... Such fun! Go to Full Review
Jasper Rees The Arts Desk 04/15/2019
It's a slightly frustrating perspective because Cathy, having the patience of a saint, is nicer and perhaps more passive than at least some of the rest of us. But stick with it, because Mum will certainly grow. Go to Full Review
Jane Rackham Radio Times 04/15/2019
This is observational comedy at its most painful. The agonisingly repetitious exchange between a surprisingly patient Cathy and her aged in-laws about what constitutes a buffet will strike a chord with many. Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Feb 2 Definitely not what I consider funny! In the very first scene a florist delivers a bouquet and the heroine’s son, instead of using a vase, cuts the stems to put the flowers in a glass. Then, to continue the abbreviation theme, his girlfriend arrives dressed for the funeral in a red minidress! Supposedly, the only piece of clothing that fit. Hilarious! Three seasons of this is cruel and unusual punishment. I escaped with 2:30 minutes. See more Joe C @JoeCoffee 12/13/2023 Was looking forward to the pairing of Manville & Mullen (and especially for the novelty of seeing the latter as a good guy) but whoever (the writer) thought it was a brilliant idea to make every supporting character obnoxious, clueless, nonredeemable and completely unlikable...oh, and give them lots and lots of lines...makes for an excruciating comedy experience. I hung through one season to see if Manville would give all the free-loaders a boot, but to no avail. My wife continued with Season 2 and told me it's more of the same. If I want to spend time with dysfunctional house guests, I'll invite the in-laws over, thank you very much. See more Lee C 10/23/2023 Brilliant! Wonderful actors playing hilarious characters! See more 04/04/2021 Mum is such a good show! There is nothing else like it! It doesn't move fast and it's perfect that way, because it pulls you right into their life and what it feels like to be them. This show makes you feel, laugh, and wish for love. It tugs at the heartstrings and leaves you feeling happy. See more 06/10/2019 I found series 3 - after watching 2 episodes I googled and realised there were 2 series's before the ‘Birthday week away'. So I went back to the beginning and watched series 1. I laughed, I cried, I cringed, I rewound! And I completely fell in love with ‘Mum'. The relationship between Cathy and Kelly is 1 of the best TV couplings I've ever seen!! The script is fantastic, and they both play it so well!! Kelly could have been annoying and disliked for the things she says, but I found myself absolutely loving her character, and her relationship with her boyfriends mum goes at 100 miles a hour! Within 5 minutes of meeting (as they prepare to leave for Cathy's husbands funeral!) Kelly asks if she can borrow some knickers because she thought she better wear some for church. Haha! This and many other 1 liners completely endeared her to me and her character develops week on week, she loves Cathy so much and it really comes across! Top marks for story line, the other relationships are brilliant and very real! And of course as a viewer I was hoping that Cathy and Michael would get together as he is obviously head over heels for her. I felt that Pauline's character was annoying and cutting at first, and I felt so sorry for Derek. Until the episode which shows where she works and after that I couldn't stop laughing every time she came out with a hilarious comment! Also I must mention the Grandparents - again the 1 liners are fantastic and the comedy timing is genius!! This show has been a breath of fresh air and I really hope they will make a series 4! And 5! And 6! I don't want it to end! See more Read all reviews
