With his calm demeanor, Lewis grounds the series, allowing the viewer to genuinely accept that the local vicar can also be a crime solver. Go to Full Review

Based on British author The Rev. Richard Coles’ mysteries, “Murder Before Evensong” has just enough edge — including a zinger of a finale — to keep us hooked. Go to Full Review

Without Sidney Chambers’s sexy halo glow or the astute mischief of GK Chesterton’s Father Brown, it’s tough for Clement to entirely seize our interest in this by-numbers tale of a parishioner found in the knave with his throat cut. Go to Full Review

Glenn R @RT04382205 Jun 3 This was excellent. See more Cindy M @CindyCindy Jan 20 Daniel Lewis is a fine actor and is the anchor for this very typical British murder mystery in a small village. What sets this series apart is Lewis. He is subtle but always powerful in his role as the local rector. The supporting cast did a fine job (even though the mother's character did nothing to elevate the series). There could be a season two as long as writers keep Lewis' character mature, reasonable and plausible (well sort of!). See more Pamela M @Cassandra88 Jan 2 Very good, although a bit slow. Probably could have been 3 or 4 episodes instead of 6. Cracking performances by Matthew Lewis (my favourite former Potter star for sure) and the rest of the cast. The big reveal was very far fetched- a spy protecting their identity would have been far more plausible! The cover-up was completely unnecessary - who would have blamed them for the very first death. Even so, highly recommended and I really hope there's a second season. See more David S @RT30995910 Nov 19 It is a little slow, but then so were the 80s! It's very rich in atmosphere, and true to a version of the 80s that I remember. I enjoyed the books for their cosiness, but this adaptation adds edge and bite where I suspect the books lacked it. It's very character and performer driven, and their casting is so good. Matthew Lewis has such an interesting and expressive demeanor saying so much in stillness, and Amanda Burton exemplifies a woman of that time. See more Angela P @RT44420854 Nov 18 Was soooooooo slow, nearly gave up several times. I wanted it to finish in the end. See more Connie L @RT10589228 Nov 9 Yes, it's blatantly cozy, but so well done. Depend on the British to give us fine actors who look like real people. Just enough sentimentality and just enough camp to be entertaining. Matthew Lewis was excellent, as were troopers Amanda Redman and Adam James. James handled Bernard with admirable subtlety. Always love seeing Amit Shah. That face. The two peas in a pod girls were so good. Marion Bailey did a wonderful job. Would love to see a second series. See more Read all reviews
