"My Mother and Other Strangers" is written and created by Barry Devlin. Set in 1943, during World War II, the drama follows the circumstances of a community based in Northern Ireland at the time. At the center of the narrative is the Coyne family and their neighbors, whose lives are disrupted when a U.S. Army Air Force of 4,000 service men and women set up base in their rural parish. A school teacher and mother of three, Rose Coyne, finds herself trapped in a love triangle with her husband, Michael, and a USAAF liaison officer, Capt. Dreyfuss.

The plotlines are so obvious you can see everything coming a mile off, ten miles off, 20 miles off. Go to Full Review

The theme is a tempting one-what will Rose, a woman who loves her husband deeply, do? Whatever it is ... we know enough about this "Masterpiece" drama to understand it's not going to be anything earth-shattering. Go to Full Review

My Mother and Other Strangers, written by Barry Devlin, is beautifully filmed, and, like so many Masterpiece productions, it certainly offers transport to another time and place. Go to Full Review

09/03/2020 I would give 5 stars but I was really put off by the Rose Coyne character's eyes. They were swimming in her head like pool balls! Either she has a medical condition or too much Botox. Could not even look at her for 50%of the season! See more 12/30/2019 Hope there will be a season 2. See more 08/15/2017 Beautifully filmed. Hope there is another season! See more 07/31/2017 excellent-can't wait foe more! See more 07/22/2017 Normally I am a great fan of Masterpiece and/or Brit dramas, but the mis-casting of key characters in this series ruined what should have been an interesting portrayal of that time and place. The actors playing Rose, Captain Dreyfuss and Nurse Tillie failed to make their characters believable, let alone sympathetic. Rose's dramatic interpretations ran the gamut from wide opened eyes to bulging out of her head eyes, accompanied by various degrees of slack-jawed open mouth. Reminded me of Marty Feldman. Captain Dreyfuss was wooden and bland, and he and Rose had zero sex appeal/chemistry, either individually or between them. I mean, compare them to Downton Abbey's Matthew Crawley/Dan Stevens & Lady Mary/ Michelle Dockery - well, there is no comparison. And listening to Nurse Tillie's attempt at an American accent was akin to listening to fingernails on a blackboard. I've lived in all parts of the U.S. -deep south/eastern seaboard/midwest and West Coast. Never heard anything at all like her accent - she sounded like someone from Australia trying to do a U. S. southern drawl. I'm just thankful for the excellent 2nd season of Grantchester and their fine ensemble cast. See more Read all reviews
