Episode Info

The fifth volume of this six-part PBS series focuses on the ways that humans and other creatures try to improve their longevity and lifestyle through efficient use of their brains. While humans have a strong edge on survival with their reasoning powers, various animals make highly efficient use of other body structures to remain viable in the environment. Eyes, flippers, wings, teeth, and sheer brute muscle strength are all used in ways that can keep an intelligent human being or other creature with a highly evolved brain from gaining an edge. The program is quick to note, however, that organisms such as algae and jellyfish do just fine without a brain or central processing center for information. Scientists and other experts share their opinions about how brain power helps in the environment as various life forms are studied on camera.
