With rising international tensions in the Indo-Pacific, a brilliant and eclectic team of U.S. NCIS agents and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are grafted into a multinational taskforce to keep naval crimes in check in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet. Led by NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey and Sgt. Jim "JD" Dempsey, the team of Americans and Aussies must quickly learn to trust each other, overcoming and harnessing their differences to solve each case. Though jurisdictional tussles and culture clashes make for a rocky start, Mackey comes to respect JD's nose for the truth, and JD comes to respect her maverick style. Meanwhile, sassy AFP Constable Evie Cooper and endlessly curious Special Agent DeShawn Jackson form a fast friendship, while curmudgeonly forensic pathologist Dr. Roy Penrose meets his match in the brilliant young forensic scientist Bluebird "Blue" Gleeson.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

NCIS transplants its tried-and-true formula to the land down under without innovating much else, delivering another solid spinoff for one of television's most reliable procedurals.

NCIS isn’t a franchise famed for its subtlety or surprises, and fans know that. The Sydney spin-off delivers exactly what’s expected, albeit in a spiffy new setting and with jokes about white-tailed spiders. Go to Full Review
Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) 12/08/2023
Leads Olivia Swann and Todd Lasance have a decent chemistry, while Mystery Road: Origin’s Tuuli Narkle nails cop sidekick duty. Go to Full Review
Thelma Adams TheWrap 11/14/2023
“NCIS: Sydney” is faithful to the formula, while developing its own individual vibe at the frequently awkward intersection of American and Australian culture. Go to Full Review

A surprisingly welcome addition to the growing NCIS franchise, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Sydney, Australia. Go to Full Review
Dustin Rowles Pajiba 11/17/2023
Aside from the setting and the accents, there is nothing new here. It’s not even interesting as a contrast to the American procedurals. It’s bland, uninteresting, and mid. Go to Full Review
Joel Keller Decider 11/15/2023
There’s snippets of hope here and there, but the overall setup seems clumsy, and much of the dialogue is just as clumsy as the setup. Go to Full Review

bruce K. @RT78507284 Apr 27 Good location, great possibilities. I want this show to succeed. The writers seemed to have changed energies through the seasons, in what seems to bring up the supporting actors in more likable and attractive participataive roles. Plausibility of US Navy Law Enforcement being as cavalier in a foreign country, and enforcing the law through Australia takes the story down a notch. Acting is stiff, with some strong performances. Storylines are interesting, but not consitant. The stories should carry through through future episodes, and not squished into a solved case by the end of episode . Production tries to hard. Background character development stories are haphazard. See more kenza d @RT84627621 05/20/2025 I love the NCIS shows, but I couldn't get past two episodes of this one, don't know if it's the accents or the acting that throws me off, probably both. See more Chronald C @RT85412442 04/12/2025 It's better if you accept that it was written by nascent ai and the lead guy is Hemsworth with down syndrome and watch it that way. a steaming pile of peepee beyond that. See more Vicky R @RT26431228 04/11/2025 If you love procedural drama and any form of cop show, you’ll enjoy this. It took me a while to get into the combo of light-hearted and drama story line, but once I did I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this show. Some episodes are a bit more on the ridiculous side, and some are more ‘realistic’ but settle in and be entertained. See more Bob H @RT12723863 02/27/2025 Ermagerd.... I am an Aussie and think this is not passable.. Contrived stories that seem not to be good enough for the NCIS environment... I guess the Aussie tropes are accepted by the non-Aussies. I still am compelled to watch but it is getting harder See more Judy R @RT03613761 08/27/2024 I tried watching this show when Season 1 first came out. Really disappointed. Have now tried again and still don’t like it. Quit while watching E3. Terrible acting. And I can’t imagine the cost of production. And that was reason that NCIS: Hawaii was cancelled. That show I found engaging! Going wrong direction. Hope NCIS: Origins proves a better production! See more Read all reviews
