A comedy that's also an incredible exploration of grief.

Even when the show gets a bit predictable, in terms of teen relationships and parental conflicts, it remains so endearing that I couldn't fault it. Plus, it has enough originality and fun little quirks... to keep it feeling fresh.

When Ramakrishnan is paired with Ramona Young and Lee Rodriguez as besties Eleanor and Fabiola, respectively, the trio have all the crackling spark of a John Hughes movie.

The show is also smartly written, so that the season builds to a climax that is organic and, I found, moving.

Much like Hulu's stellar PEN15, Never Have I Ever anchors its hormonal hijinks in authentic, poignant female friendships.

And an impressive supporting cast adds to the all-ages fun, with Niecy Nash dispensing tough love as Devi's therapist and surprisingly entertaining narration from temperamental kindred spirit Joe McEnroe.

It's refreshing to see white actors in the minority, and if I found it a bit too glib for my taste, it might be that it's skewed to a younger populace.

Never Have I Ever perplexingly dabbles in casual Islamophobia, ableism, and fatphobia.

It's a funny, laugh-out-loud comedy with a big nod to diversity and cultures in our United States. I love this series and can't wait for Season 2. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan's breakout performance.

Thanks to a dedication to its characters' complexity and standout lead performances, Never Have I Ever is easily Kaling's best show yet.

Apr 17, 2020 | Full Review…

Never Have I Ever is like an awkward teenager saying the corniest things to win affection: annoying at first but then it quickly grows on you. And just as quickly the series wins you over with rare wit and unexpected emotion.

Audience Reviews for Never Have I Ever: Season 1

What is this obscene piece of sh.t? A 14 year old teen asking for sex? Garbage!
  • Aug 01, 2020
Being an Indian viewer, the main thing that I would like to do is give a pat to Mindy Kaling for her sensational casting of Matreyi as the lead for the show. She is gorgeous in an Indian kind of beauty-scaffolding and has mad ability when it comes to pulling off that hot-headed vulnerable Indian teen look. The rest of the cast supports her well and overall, this is one of my favourite shows this year

Feels like you're going to watch a fun, raunchy, modern teen comedy, but it quickly evolves into so much more. Great!
  • Jul 14, 2020
This show is amazing! So funny and the actors are spectacular I love it when shows come out of nowhere and are insanely good.
  • Jul 12, 2020
Loved the peek into an exaggerated high school world with the super-smart Indian girl and the rollercoaster of romance and rivalry. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the comedy peppered throughout.
  • Jul 11, 2020
Never Have I Ever is the perfect comedy to get to know a different side of teenage dramas with characters that are enjoyed from the first chapter.
  • Jul 11, 2020
Adorable, funny, insightful with a tear jerker ending. Perfect quarantine show

Poo-pooed on this so hard when I saw the trailer. Decided to give it a go with the fiancé and ended up being hit so hard with ethnic feels. My childhood may not have been Indian but wow I felt everything the main character went through. Every episode reminded me of another year in highschool and the cultural things I participated in as a teen and young adult. Aside from death (which my childhood surprisingly had none) I related more to this series than I did to Fresh off the Boat or Kim's Convenience... I'm so happy this series was on Netflix so I can recommend it to everyone!
