The controversial restoration of the Sistine Chapel is studied during this PBS program. Interesting footage is included that details many of the scientific measures used by the restoration team. Cameras bring viewers within inches of the famous Michelangelo frescoes. There is also a historical look at this papal chapel in the Vatican Palace that was built between 1473 and 1481 by the architect Giovanni dei Doci for Pope Sixtus IV. Viewers will see that though the structure's exterior is rather drab, its interior walls and ceiling are adorned with the frescoes created by many great Florentine Renaissance artists. Discussions are included with experts who address whether they believe the bright, restored colors are truly representative of the original ones painted by Michelangelo.
