Critic Reviews for Of Kings and Prophets Season 1
All Critics (20) | Top Critics (11) | Fresh (5) | Rotten (15)
It's more like a descendant of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, made just modest and melodramatic enough to irk both faith-based audiences and those coming to it in search of a salacious, sanguinary fix.
Kings and Prophets for the most part is deadly serious in both its approach and intent. It sounds strange to say its time has passed.
A good-looking TV production - filmed in South Africa - but with minimal appeal to either the sword-and-sandal crowd or the faith-based one.
More to the point, the effort to substitute standard-issue television intrigue and sizzle for the sweep and wonderment of the source material fails.
A TV show that uses biblical characters as an excuse for sex and violence while jettisoning the religious intent is not Bible-based in any real sense of the idea. Or worth watching, Saul or not.
Frankly, what seems even more sacrilegious than hewing ABC-close to a religious story is the notion that maybe Of Kings and Prophets wants to be like HBO's Game of Thrones.
Of Kings and Prophets is also deeply, profoundly, confusing from a "what is the point of this" perspective.
Of Kings and Prophets takes this dramatic event and superimposes a tiresome modern motivation.
Let's put it this way: If the newly released Game of Thrones trailer won't tide you over until the HBO drama's return, Of Kings and Prophets would make a decent substitute, if only it didn't take itself so seriously.
It does have a few things going for it, including high production values and intriguing political and religious themes.
Watching, you feel as though its story is just familiar enough to seem inevitable whenever it's not tedious, and its earnestness short-circuits any electrical charge of wit or sexiness.
This odd retelling of one of the Bible's most familiar tales could win converts.

Mar 08, 2016Oddball modern hairstyles and mediocre makeup. The show is nothing to write your Grans about, but my wife seems to like the first episode of the series and will watch again next week to see if it improves. 2.5 stars out of 5.
