One Big Happy: Season 1 Reviews

June 26, 2018
One Big Happy aired what was probably its final episode on Tuesday night, and it was really, truly wonderful.

Although Ellen DeGeneres is an executive producer of the show, her influence is undetectable.

Cuthbert, Zano and Brook make these predictable pratfalls work because they're in on the joke and along for the ride.

Despite direction that seems to consist of "storm to other side of the room" and "make funny faces," Cuthbert and Zano manage to sell the lifelong friendship, but they aren't allowed to do much with it beyond a lot of adolescent bickering.

One Big Happy isn't fresh or funny enough to transcend its message.

Basically every punchline involving Cuthbert's character revolves around her being a lesbian and having lesbian footwear and clothes and interests. If there's any additional room for Cuthbert-generated punchlines, they involve her OCD or neatness.

The problem is Prudence. From the moment she opens her mouth it's like stubbing your toe while pouring hot coffee all over your lap. Grating is not the right word to describe her, because there has to be something even worse than grating.

What isn't a surprise is that many others involved in the series are veterans of 2 Broke Girls, quite possibly the most offensive network sitcom in TV history.

Watching "One Big Happy" is like discovering the crusts that remain in a box from "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" and trying to eat them.
March 16, 2015
"One Big Happy" is one of those calculated illusions - a series that tries to appear forward-thinking and edgy by tackling the evolving definition of family and parenting, only to filter those elements through a musty sitcom template.

One idea does not a sitcom make.

Although broad and sometimes forced, One Big Happy also can be bitingly amusing, with its three principals meshing well while clashing often.

Even while embracing the unconventional, its eye is trained too cautiously on the TV past, where dinosaurs like "Three's Company" once roamed.

This jaunty half-hour comedy is merely out for easy grins and giggles-and though the belly laughs are few, the cast consistently manages to charm.

It is brightly written, and tender at heart. Most of all, it is endowed with a great ensemble cast, including Rebecca Corry and Chris Williams as Lizzy's sister and brother-in-law.
