The lush, beautifully detailed set design is extraordinary, creating a world that feels both magical and completely lived-in. The acting is outstanding across the board, bringing its wonderfully eccentric characters to life. The story takes some wonderfully unusual and unexpected turns, with strange, surreal and often highly entertaining arcs that keep you guessing. Visually spectacular, brilliantly acted and unlike almost anything else on television — a genuinely captivating series. It would be impossible to tell every part of the book but the writers captured a good portion of the events. But what they capture best, combining the magical or spiritual elements with the actual events to capture the purpose of the story itself. The ending narrative is exceptional. However, if you you have read, followed or know of, this book by Gabo, you will realise how extremely difficult it would be to bring that book to a visual adaptation. I read this novel many years ago (in Spanish) and read it again before I watched Season One. I was skeptical at first. Bringing García Márquez's saga to the screen was a feat that required not only ambition but courage. The result, however, is a bit of magical realism in itself and should meet the approval of anyone who considers the book to be one of the greatest universal works of literature ever. Lush, lavish, whimsical, humorous and profound, the story of the Buendía family and the loss of innocence as a society hits all the marks that the author intended.
