Critic Reviews for Orange Is the New Black Season 6

All Critics (37) | Top Critics (17)

The writing, always very good and this year aided and abetted by local novelist Merritt Tierce, is even better when it's focused on the characters that have -- in fits and starts -- been so vividly brought to life.

Fans who hated the fifth season should mostly love the sixth, which is a return to normal, or as "normal" as OITNB ever gets. But the end does feel a little bit closer.

Some episodes are dazzling, some sloppy, but Orange and its creator, Jenji Kohan, are still pulling off tricks and twists that few other shows dare attempt.

It restores the sense of discovery that season one held, back when Piper learned the ways of prison life - only this time, it places almost all of the cast favourites in a newborn state... But it isn't quite back to its best.

Luckily though, the web hit has once again found its footing in its latest season, a return to form with the show once again spinning fascinatingly dark and twisted tales.

Season six brings in some new faces and keeps us rooting for our favorite jailbirds, but at the same time we wonder for how much longer it can keep going.

Aug 24, 2018 | Full Review…

Although Season 6 wasn't the series' best work by far, it was a stark reminder of how good Orange is when it brings in fresh blood and new perspectives rather than clinging to the old.

Jul 30, 2018 | Full Review…

I think this season rediscovered those moments of humanity, and the show was stronger for it.

Jul 31, 2018 | Full Review…

Don't believe the lack of hype. Though not as exciting or dynamic as it used to be, the series retains its ability to be moving and surprising.

Jul 31, 2018 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

Season 6 continues to provide commentary, regardless of how socially inept it may come across, on privilege, fragility and those who are complicit with being a part of systems of oppression.

It's hard to determine where to put your care -- and your focus -- when the threat of a familiar face or a whole new backstory lurks behind every door.

Dark, glorious, bizarrely redemptive.

If I wanted to turn into Telemundo I would have what's with all the Spanish ridiculous
  • Jul 06, 2019
This show has long passed its peak and is falling apart fast - only 35 critics reviewed this season because its really a waste of time, there are many new series out and this one (unless you are a social activist who marches with Antifa on weekends) is really dull and kind of silly. The cinimatic quility has gone down and the acting shows signs that the actors are taking it as seriously as the writers who throw these seasons together in weeks. Don't waste your time.

I gave up on the first episode about 15 minutes in and have given up on this show for good. I mostly enjoyed seasons 1-3, didn't care at all about Poussey's death and everything that happened afterwards. This show is just made in America trash now.

Between 2.5 and (very close) 2 stars. This TV series always showed that justice had nothing to do with the future of its characters, and although we could forgive the not-too-much-respect to their own plots and specific figures, it seems to me that they have played much to be cruel. Anyway, last season lost much respect to the previous one because (although sisters story) was amusing, it lost the point respect to the destiny of the characters we were following it for.

I have had a relative gap between my last two dosages of Orange is the New Black which I think is to my benefit. After a fifth season that didn't particularly strike a cord with me, it was good to see an improvement in proceedings with season six. Still, it doesn't match the quality of earlier seasons. Starting strongly, the season does lag a little in the middle, but claws it back towards the end. However, the season's ending does not match the strength of previous seasons but is still good and engaging. The antagonists, while good, do not match the brilliance of past seasons. Still, it was refreshing to see a new setting and the introduction of new inmates, and it was an injection of pace that was much needed. Season six sets up the last season strongly and is a recommended watch.

Did not enjoy it as much as other seasons, although the final payoff was worth it. Badison was irritating. The Denning sisters were my favourite part.

This show has officially gone off the rails. While on a positive note it has veered (a little) away from the preachy messages for feminism, LGBTQ, etc... it seems to entirely lost it's comic relief. None of the primary characters are redeeming or even likeable anymore. Sure sign of a show that takes itself way to seriously. Time to wrap this thing up.

The cast OITNB never ceases to blow my mind. This is without a doubt the most talented troop of actors ever assembled in the history of television. The writing and directing is the tightest of any series out there. It's poignant, illuminating, and hilarious all at the same time. OITNB definitely makes my list of best TV series of all time.
