Critic Reviews for Orange Is the New Black Season 2

All Critics (45) | Top Critics (26)

This round is just as addicting as the first, the ensemble rising to the occasion of topping their first outing.

The producers find a way to bring in a new crop of fresh characters without losing the old zany favorites.

Orange Is the New Black remains a vibrantly hued, singular achievement. Darkly dramatic and comedically spiked, it deals in the dehumanization and restoration of both guards and inmates.

If this sentimental streak is a little soft-headed, it springs from the series' huge heart and its expansive humanism.

From what I can tell so far, it's like the first one but more in almost every way: more fun, more crass, more ridiculous, and also, yes, more conscientious.

I suggest heartily binge-watching the 13-episode second season that Netflix released online this morning. There might be no better examination of what it means to be lonely and trapped in the fallout of a hard life on television today.

Season 2 was so richly detailed, with so many characters getting the spotlight and so many different stories going on, the only problem is knowing when to stop writing about it.

... Orange Is the New Black is back (full season on Netflix Friday) with another 13 funny, disturbing and thought-provoking episodes.

Netflix didn't invent binge-watching, but with the prison drama Orange Is the New Black it did give us something to make the bingeing worth it.

Luckily for us, as the show moves further afield from [Piper's] origin story, it reminds us again and again of that awful truth Piper still can't quite accept: that it's not all about her.

Audience Reviews for Orange Is the New Black: Season 2

½

Season 2 was as good as season 1, if not better. Piper remained in prison for more treats. New characters were introduced: Psychopathic Vee, hippie Asian Soso that created more drama. Old recurring characters got more roles in this season as we continue to discover their fascinating past. The only problem I had was that we were shown Piper's ex's entire love affair with Piper's best friend. Honestly, I don't care, it was stupid and completely irrelevant. Other than this minor frustration, season 2 of OITNB will not disappoint fans.

A perfectly paced progression on a grounded yet still interesting story.

Season 2 of Orange is the New Black remains just as engrossing, funny and entertaining as it's previous season - and introduces a whole batch of new characters to love and get invested in.
