It's great TV because every single character it looks at has a point of view and a need to express themselves, because every single one of them struggles against the same, common enemy of dehumanization.

From what I can tell so far, it's like the first one but more in almost every way: more fun, more crass, more ridiculous, and also, yes, more conscientious.

I suggest heartily binge-watching the 13-episode second season that Netflix released online this morning. There might be no better examination of what it means to be lonely and trapped in the fallout of a hard life on television today.

Just as in TV's first flashback-heavy, multi-character drama Lost, it's the flashbacks that deepen and humanize the characters, and that makes Orange a unique and outstanding series.

The new [season] can be summed up by Natasha Lyonne's [line] upon Piper's return to Litchfield. "Glad to see you evolving... and getting past the whole 'I'm-the-star-of-my-own-movie-and-everyone-else's' complex." But she is evolving. And so is the show.

Fortunately, the new episodes give complex, surprising backstories to some of the cast's scene-stealers whose flashbacks we didn't see in the first season, including Uzo Aduba's Suzanne, Danielle Brooks's spirited Taystee, and Samira Wiley's Poussey.

There's a striking sense of confidence across the board. You don't sense any desperation; any need to please, as you do in so much television. Like so many of its characters, Orange is what it is. Like it, hate it, they don't care.

Perhaps due to Jenji Kohan's background in comedy, OITNB is able to make its central themes about exclusion, deprivation, loneliness and brutal power dynamics go down very easily indeed.

What season 2 does give us is OITNB getting bigger, both in its cast and its themes: Having built out dozens of colorfully named characters (Taystee, Yoga Jones, Black Cindy), the sprawling Orange is like Game of Thrones: Prison.

Man oh man are the first six episodes of season 2 wonderful. In many ways, they're better than their counterparts from the first season, because Jenji Kohan has a better sense of the stories, characters and actors she has on hand.

Forget the sophomore slump. In its second season, Orange Is the New Black, Netflix's most popular original show, deepens its focus into the lives of its troubled, terrifying and yet often hilarious characters. It's even more addictive.
