Critic Reviews for Orange Is the New Black Season 7

All Critics (33) | Top Critics (13)

Piper's position at the very end of Orange Is the New Black was predetermined. Taystee's represented a choice on the part of the writers. No show of the current era has so sharply used juxtaposition to depict inequality in America.

OITNB leaves the air a pioneer that hardly any other series has caught up to-and with some of its best episodes in years.

That's one of the problems with OITNB - there are so many characters with so many varied issues that we can be left feeling a little short-changed.

Moving, emotional final season that hits mostly high notes, and satisfactorily resolves a whole lot of stories.

The final season of Orange mostly works and does give a compelling, emotional farewell to these characters that we've grown to love.

Despite the contrivances, Orange is the New Black grips so hard you'll forget the cat's burning and the dinner needs to go out.

One of the best of the peak TV era with barely a false note to be heard.

The show must escalate conflict while at the same time wrapping up individual stories...Orange Is the New Black... complete this task well, even if predictably most of the time.

Jul 29, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

I was left in awe of the characters from Orange is the New Black who saw prison for what it was - a hopeless hellscape - and still managed to tap into their pre-prison humanity and infect others with their kindness.

Orange Is The New Black is back and it's better than ever. The episodes and the overall tone of the series is snappier, funnier and full of insight.

Audience Reviews for Orange Is the New Black: Season 7

This is likely the worst season. I have to agree with the other negative reviews. The writers really screwed this show up in the last season. They took a good show, with compelling, real feeling characters, and got too preachy and turned the characters from real people into crummy two dimensional cookie-cutter puppets designed to push an agenda. I did make it through the season, but it was pretty hard with the last 4 episodes. The final episode has to be one of the worst finale shows in TV history. All the complexity, realness, and power of the characters was lost this season, replaced by schlock, twists, turns, and trying to tie everything up into this tight little box for everyone to fit into nicely. It's the sort of garbage you see on Lifetime Movie Network. Personally I blame Jenji Kohan for this. She managed to screw up Weeds, a great show at the beginning, and and utterly terrible show when it ended. I sort of expected the same thing to happen, and it (mostly) did, though not quite as bad, since Weeds died after about 3 seasons, and Orange had a little more life to it. Jenjii likes to massively change her characters, and by the end you start to not even recognize them after a while. This is what happened this season. My wife bailed on the last 4 episodes, honestly a good call on her part.

The show is wonderful, from the cast to the writing to the shooting of every scene. Of course it had some down time but even then it was an absolute blast to watch.
  • Aug 16, 2019
I was left wanting more. It just feels like a lot of the girls were just left hanging. Not my favorite season.
  • Aug 14, 2019
Absolutely love this show. I just can't believe they ended it so soon. Makes me so sad, my whole family watched these. Y'all need to bring it back!
  • Aug 14, 2019
The writing lost what made the show great. It use to be a character drama and this season was a parade of political issues. It felt like a political add. I made it to episode 4, and I'm quitting on it. I enjoyed seasons 1-6, it's a shame that they ruined it.

Such a powerful season, so many messages, so many heartbreaking scenes; the court cases, the way the immigrants are treated, how hard it is to break free of a broken system.
  • Aug 13, 2019
It's fairly satisfying, but the finale so clearly shines a bright light on the show's flaws. Characters come and go with little to no explanation. The ones that are followed this year are engaging. I want a show with Caputo and Fig!

it is an amazing good bye
  • Aug 11, 2019
This is probably the best season ever since it narrates about the ICE and its inhuman acts, undocumented immigrants and their life, and the immigration policies. It's great time to talk about urgent situations regarding immigration policies and Trump & Republican racism against minorities.

This season was so horrible. The writers were so focused on touching upon too many aspects of the current "political brouhaha", they failed to close so many chapters on so many characters we love. Instead they just shipped them off, killed them off or wrote them off completely. This may have been a decent season if not the final. Shame on you writers for forgetting about the people. Your job is entertainment, after all.
